As Seraphine completes the runic circle, the air around her shimmers with a soft blue glow. The binding magic holds strong, containing the spirit within the tunnel. Jeane's eyes narrow in surprise, then relax into a grudging respect as she takes in the sight. "Well done, Seraphine," she says, her voice low and appreciative. "But we can't afford to linger here. The structural damage ahead is getting worse by the second. I can hear rocks shifting, and the sound of water flowing through new channels – we're not far from a major collapse."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps into the alcove, her crimson eyes scanning the newly reinforced runic circle with grudging approval. That was... actually competent work, Seraphine. I didn't think you had it in you to pull through like that under pressure. She runs a hand through her white hair, pushing dust and small stones from the tunnel collapse out of her face.

We've bought ourselves some time, but not much. The structural damage ahead is getting worse—you heard that water sound, right? A collapsed section turning into an aqueduct means we're losing stability fast. She taps one wing against her side restlessly. We need to push forward before the entire tunnel washes out or collapses completely. Jeane pauses, her gaze shifting back to Seraphine with something almost like concern in her expression—though it's quickly masked by her usual sardonic tone. You look half-dead. How many turns did that actually cost you? Because we're going to need every bit of magic we can muster if we want to get out of this shitpile alive. She pulls out one of the remaining torches and lights it, holding it up to better see the tunnel ahead. I'm moving forward. You can try to catch your breath here or follow me—I don't give a damn either way. But know this: whatever's making that sound, whatever’s destabilizing the structure? It’s not natural. And if we're going to face it, I'd rather do it on my terms than get caught in a pocket of air while you recover. Jeane takes a step toward the partially blocked passage, her hand already reaching for her heavy mace. Clock's ticking again, Seraphine. Time to decide if you're with me or if I'm doing this alone.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I push myself up from the cold stone floor, my legs shaking slightly from the exertion of channeling so much magic so quickly. The air around me still crackles faintly with residual energy from the reinforced runic circle.
"You're right," I say, my voice hoarse but steady as I take a deep breath and straighten my posture, trying to project an image of confidence despite how drained I feel. "We can't afford to wait. Whatever's causing that structural damage... it sounds like it could bring the whole place down on our heads."
I move towards Jeane, who stands at the edge of the alcove, her crimson eyes fixed on the partially blocked tunnel ahead. The sound of shifting stone and distant, ominous water is louder now, a constant reminder of the precariousness of our situation.
"I'm coming," I continue, my hand instinctively moving to the pouch at my belt where I keep my arcane components. They feel light, a stark reminder of how much power I've just expended and how little I have left to spare. "But we need to be smart about this. That spirit... it's contained for now, but it won't stay that way forever. And if the tunnel collapses while we're in here..."
My voice trails off as I imagine being buried alive, trapped with a hostile entity I can’t control. The thought sends a chill through me, and I shudder involuntarily.
"We need to know what's causing the damage," I say, my mind already racing ahead, trying to plan our next move. "If it's another part of the tower collapsing naturally, we can work around it. But if something inside the structure is deliberately destabilizing this area... that changes everything."
I step closer to Jeane, peering past her at the rockfall blocking a portion of the passage. It’s not insurmountable, but it will slow us down. And time, I realize with a sinking feeling, is exactly what we don’t have.
"I can try to scout ahead," I suggest, my voice gaining a note of determination despite the fear gnawing at my stomach. "My magic might be able to pick up on any unnatural energies that could be responsible. But I'll need cover. If something goes wrong, if the spirit gets loose... you'll need to be ready."
I look up at Jeane, my expression serious and unflinching despite the exhaustion pulling at every muscle in my body. "This is a terrible idea, isn't it?" The question is rhetorical; we both know there’s no other choice. The sound of more stone shifting echoes through the tunnel, closer this time.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. Whatever's out there, whatever force is tearing this place apart... we have to face it head-on. It’s our only chance at survival.
"Lead the way," I say, my voice firm now as I gesture towards the blocked passage. "But be ready for anything. And if you hear me scream... just keep running."
