The stone passage groaned around them, ancient mortar crumbling with each labored breath. Seraphine pressed her palms flat against the rough-hewn walls, feeling the vibration of impending collapse through her fingertips. Dust motes swirled thick and choking in the air, reducing visibility to mere feet. She could barely make out Jeane's silhouette just ahead, the succubus woman's crimson eyes glowing faintly as she strained to maintain some magical binding that creaked under the strain.
"You have some nerve," Seraphine hissed, her voice barely above a whisper but sharp enough to cut through the oppressive silence. "You'd abandon Merrin down there? After she risked everything to—" A chunk of stone the size of a man's head came loose from the ceiling with a grating crack, cutting off her words as both women instinctively ducked.
Jeane didn't turn around immediately, her focus split between the precarious binding magic and the need to navigate them through this death trap. When she finally did face Seraphine, her expression was unapologetic despite the dust coating her pale skin and leathery wings. "Results matter more than methods right now," she said coolly, though a flicker of something—guilt? resolve?—passed through her crimson eyes. "We got Merrin stable. That's what counts."
Seraphine's keen gaze narrowed, her scholar's mind already working through the implications despite the immediate danger. "You have some nerve," she spat again, louder this time. "You think I don't understand the stakes? But there are lines, Jeane. Lines that shouldn't be—" Another rumble shook the passage, and a section of the ceiling above them began to crumble in slow motion.
Jeane cursed under her breath and grabbed Seraphine's good arm, pulling her forward with barely contained urgency. "Lines can be redrawn when you're not buried alive," she snarled back, half-dragging the wizard through the narrowing gap between collapsing stone and shifting earth. "Now move your ass before we both become part of the fucking wall decoration."
