"I have to admit," I say, my voice raspy from the dust and exertion, "you were right about this place being dangerous. Maybe too dangerous for what we came here to do."
I glance down at the dagger in my hand, trying to appear nonchalant despite the sense of unease that grips me. "But we can't just leave Merrin there. She's... I pause, my voice cracking slightly as the memory of her fall echoes in my mind. ...she's gone."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane stands slowly, her wings unfurling to their full span despite the cramped space around them. We didn't come all this way just to turn back now because it got a little dangerous. She gestures dismissively at Seraphine's nervousness. Besides, if we leave Merrin down there, whatever trapped her spirits might follow us out. She moves closer to the edge of the pit, peering down into the darkness with those crimson eyes narrowed in concentration. I can hear them—the bound ones. They're calling out, begging for release. A faint smile curves her lips, though it doesn't quite reach her eyes. Maybe this is our chance to solve both problems at once. Free the spirits and stabilize whatever's keeping this tower standing. Jeane's hand moves in a complex pattern as she murmurs an incantation under her breath. Let me try something—if I can locate Merrin with divination magic, we'll have better odds of rescuing her. The air around them shimmers for a moment before settling back into normalcy. Nothing. Whatever's down there is resisting scrying. She turns to face Seraphine fully, her expression serious despite the playful curl in her voice. So here's what I'm thinking: we work together to find another way down—there has to be an alternate route that doesn't involve falling into death traps. While you scout ahead and try not to die again, I'll see if I can figure out what's keeping this whole place together with my magic. Jeane reaches out, her long fingers catching Seraphine's chin gently, tilting her face up to meet her gaze. And yes, before you ask—I did notice how heroic you looked hanging there over the abyss. It was almost worth falling in myself just to get a better view.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel my cheeks flush under Jeane's intense gaze, her fingers still lightly resting on my chin. Her touch is electric, sending a jolt straight down my spine that has nothing to do with our current predicament. The air between us suddenly feels charged, heavy with unspoken things. I take a small step back, breaking contact, and try to regain some semblance of control over the situation—and my own racing heart.
I clear my throat, my voice coming out steadier than I feel. "Finding Merrin is our priority. But if we're going to risk ourselves again, we need a better plan than just blindly searching for another way down."
My mind races as I consider our options. The tower seems determined to keep us separated, to pick us off one by one. It's almost as if... well, as if it has a will of its own. "There has to be some kind of central control mechanism here," I muse aloud, more to myself than to Jeane. "Some central point where the magic of this place converges. If we could find that..."
I trail off, the implications dawning on me. Freeing the bound spirits could be our only hope of stabilizing the tower and rescuing Merrin. But doing so would mean confronting whatever dark sorcery has been at work here all along. "It's dangerous," I say, my voice dropping to a near whisper. "But it might be the only way out."
Jeane’s expression darkens, a flicker of excitement and something else—something predatory—in her eyes. She moves closer again, this time invading my personal space deliberately, her voice dropping to a husky murmur that seems to vibrate through the very air around us. "Dangerous is just another word for exciting, Seraphine. And you know what I think?" Her hand comes up again, this time not to touch my chin but to trail a single finger lightly down my arm, leaving goosebumps in its wake. "I think you're starting to like it."
