As Seraphine takes another step forward, the pulsing light from the runes illuminates a small inscription etched into the wall beside them. The message is in an ancient language, but Halie, with her knowledge of forgotten tongues, recognizes the script as belonging to an long-lost dialect used by the tower's original architects. She carefully transcribes the message, and the words reveal a riddle: "Where shadows dance, darkness reveals the test of worthiness."

The Bound Spirit's form stirs more violently within its circle, its coal-black eyes fixed on Seraphine with an unblinking malevolence. The air around them grows colder, and the silence is oppressive, punctuated only by the distant screams from below. Jeane's voice cuts through the tension, her words laced with caution: "We need to be careful here. We don't know what kind of magic is at work, or what this test might entail."

The shimmering path behind them begins to flicker ominously, as if it too is responding to the Bound Spirit's growing agitation.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps forward, her dark wings unfurling slightly for balance on the unstable path. I can feel it—the dark energy radiating from that thing in the circle. It's not natural. This entire place is a trap. The torches flicker ominously as she approaches. The shadows here are... wrong. They move like they have intentions of their own. Her crimson eyes narrow, fixed on the Bound Spirit's writhing form. Whatever this test is, whatever it wants... we're not walking into it blind. Jeane's voice cuts through the oppressive silence, sharp and calculating. We need to understand what this 'test of worthiness' actually means before stumbling into it. She gestures to the flickering runes on the walls. Look at these symbols—they're pulsing in sync with that creature's movements. Her hand hovers near her crossbow, not yet drawn but ready. The message Halie decoded... 'where shadows dance.' This entire chamber is a shadow garden. Jeane's eyes scan the perimeter warily. The darkness here isn't just absence of light—it's presence of something else. The flickering path behind them seems to pulse in response, and Jeane's expression darkens. Every step we take forward might be exactly what it wants. We need more information before proceeding.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The flickering of the runes and the shimmering path behind us sends a chill through me, a stark reminder of how precarious our situation has become. I feel the weight of the ancient magic pressing down on us all, a suffocating presence that seems to seep into my very bones.
I take a slow step closer to the Bound Spirit's circle, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air around it is colder, heavier than anywhere else in the chamber. Jeane's warning rings in my ears, but a morbid curiosity overrides my fear. This is what we came for, isn't it? To understand the binding magic, to find a way to free Merrin and Halie. And this creature... it holds the key to that understanding.
"I agree with you, Jeane," I say, my voice so low it's almost inaudible over the groaning of the shifting stone. "We need to be careful. But look at these runes—they’re pulsing with power. This entire chamber is a manifestation of some kind of dark energy."
My eyes flicker back to the message Halie transcribed, the words seared into my mind: 'where shadows dance, darkness reveals the test of worthiness'. It's a riddle, a challenge. And I am nothing if not a scholar of challenges.
The Bound Spirit's form writhes more violently within its confines, its mouth opening in a silent scream that seems to echo inside my skull. Its coal-black eyes are fixed on me, unblinking and malevolent. It knows why we’re here. It’s been waiting for us.
I square my shoulders, gathering what little courage I can muster. We're at the heart of darkness itself now, and every instinct is screaming at me to turn back, to run. But that's not who we are. We are adventurers, scholars, seekers of forbidden knowledge. And this... this is exactly why we left the safety of our guild.
I reach out a trembling hand towards one of the pulsing symbols on the wall, my fingers stopping just short of its glowing surface. The heat radiates from it like a living thing, a promise and a threat all at once. "If 'where shadows dance'... then perhaps we need to find the center of that dance," I murmur, more to myself than to my companions.
My gaze drops to the shimmering path behind us. It's still flickering ominously, its light growing dimmer by the second as if responding to our proximity to the Bound Spirit. I feel a sudden, sharp pang of regret for having led us so far into this trap, but it's too late for second thoughts now.
"We can't go back," I say firmly, turning to face Jeane and Halie. "We've come too far. Whatever this test is, whatever the darkness reveals... we have to see it through. For Merrin. For Halie. And maybe... maybe for ourselves too."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I know must come next. The Bound Spirit's gaze is still fixed on me, its silent scream a constant reminder of the pain that awaits us if we fail this test. But failure isn't an option anymore. We are here, and we will see this through to the end, no matter how dark the path may lead.
With a final, determined nod, I turn back to the Bound Spirit's circle. The air crackles with energy, and I can feel the dark power emanating from it, calling to me like a siren song. It wants something from us. And I intend to find out what that is, no matter the cost.
