Round 110 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine steps onto the shimmering path, it begins to glow brighter, illuminating the dark tunnel ahead. The air grows colder, and the mist swirls around her ankles, but she presses on, her friends close behind. Suddenly, a faint humming noise grows louder, and the ground beneath her feet starts to vibrate. The lever in the stone near the edge of the platform creaks ominously, and Seraphine realizes that it's triggered a hidden mechanism, causing the path to narrow and quicken. Halie stumbles, her foot catching on the loose stones, and Jeane rushes to catch her. "We need to move faster!" Jeane shouts, her eyes fixed on the tunnel ahead. The humming noise has turned into a cacophony of screeching sounds, echoing off the walls as the tunnel begins to shift and writhe like a living thing.
I call out sharply over the rumbling of the collapsing tower, my voice barely audible above the din. "Seraphine! Stop! You can’t just rush in there like an idiot!" My crimson eyes narrow as I watch her teeter dangerously close to the chasm's edge. The structural integrity of this whole area is already compromised—one wrong move and we’re all plummeting to our deaths. This isn't about heroics or saving face; it’s basic survival. We need a plan that doesn’t involve throwing ourselves into obvious deathtraps. The sound of Merrin's scream cuts through the air, filled with pain and terror from below. The thought sends a chill down my spine—I know we can't leave them to whatever fate awaits in that hidden chamber. But there has to be a better way than just leaping blindly into an obvious trap.
I feel my heart hammering against my ribs as Jeane's warning cuts through the chaos, a sharp reminder of the precariousness of our situation. The mist swirls around my ankles, cool and damp, but now it feels less like a welcoming embrace and more like a noose tightening. My eyes dart between the swirling chasm below and the crumbling platform above, where Jeane stands, her wings flared for balance.
The scream from Merrin cuts off abruptly, leaving only the groaning of stone and the swirling of the mist. Whatever is happening in that hidden chamber, it’s escalating quickly. Time is running out, and with it, our chances of saving our friends.
"I know what I'm doing," I call back over the rumbling, though my voice sounds weak even to my own ears. It's a lie, and we both know it. I have no idea what I’m doing, only that I can't stand by while our friends are trapped.
The ground shifts again, more violently this time. A section of the wall behind Jeane collapses, sending a shower of dust and debris down into the hidden chamber. The sound is deafening, like the world itself is tearing apart at the seams. I see Jeane stumble back, her wings flaring wide to maintain balance.
A new sound cuts through the chaos—a scream of pure agony, echoing up from the depths of the hidden chamber. It’s Merrin's voice, filled with pain and terror. The sound freezes me in place, every muscle locking up with a sudden, icy dread. They’re down there, they’re trapped, and something terrible is happening to them.
I feel a surge of panic rise in my chest. If this section collapses, if the entire tower comes down... we'll all be buried alive. The thought sends a chill through me, colder even than the icy mist swirling around my legs. I look at Halie, who still clings tightly to my arm, her eyes wide with shared fear and determination.
Suddenly, a faint glow catches my eye—a small, inconspicuous lever set into the stone near the edge of the platform. It looks old, covered in dust and cobwebs. But there’s a faint, pulsing light emanating from it, different from the runes on the walls. It's almost like... it was waiting for someone to find it.
I point to the lever with my free hand, my voice rising above the din. "Jeane! Look! There!"
The mist seems to part around us, revealing a faint, shimmering path leading towards the hidden chamber. It looks like it was never truly hidden at all; it just needed someone brave—or foolish—enough to seek it out.
I take a final step back from the edge, away from the chasm and its swirling depths. I look at Jeane, then at Halie, my expression grim but resolute. "We go together," I say, my voice steady now, all traces of panic gone. This isn't about individual courage; it's about unity, about working as a team to survive this nightmare.
With that, I turn my back on the platform, on the crumbling tower above, and on the uncertain fate that awaits us in the depths below. The path ahead is dark, dangerous, and probably filled with horrors beyond our imagining. But it's the only way forward. And so, with a final deep breath, I take the first step onto the shimmering path, my friends close behind.*
