Round 108 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine finishes explaining her plan, a loud creaking sound echoes from the crumbling wall, and a section of it gives way, sending a shower of dust and debris down into the hidden chamber. The sound is followed by a faint rumbling, like the distant growl of an animal awakening from a deep slumber. Halie's eyes widen in alarm as she gazes down at the chasm, her hand still tracing the binding symbols on the floor. "It's happening," she whispers, her voice trembling. The air seems to vibrate with energy, and the greenish mist swirling below the platform begins to take on a life of its own, tendrils of fog reaching out like grasping fingers. Suddenly, a faint humming noise fills the air, growing louder by the second. The humming is accompanied by a strange, pulsating glow emanating from the newly revealed chamber, casting an otherworldly light on the faces of the party members.
Jeane descends carefully down the crumbling steps, her wings beating slowly to maintain balance on the shifting stone. The air is thick with malevolent energy from below—this spirit's aura is like nothing I've encountered before. We need to assess the structural integrity of this catwalk properly before proceeding. If it collapses under us all, Merrin’s death becomes meaningless and we’ll join her in that chasm. Her sorcerer’s senses tell her these supports are barely holding. One wrong step could bring the whole thing down. Let Halie and Seraphine handle the spirit negotiation above—I’m better suited to engineering work than exorcism right now. We should find another route down if this one is unstable. The sound of rushing water grows louder, and a faint rumbling echoes through the stone around them. This tower is about to come apart at the seams—probably exactly what that spirit wants. The binding circle pulses with dark energy, its edges fraying like torn parchment. Jeane’s crimson eyes narrow as she studies the unstable architecture. We need to shore this up before proceeding or we’ll be buried alive along with whatever ancient evils are trapped down here. Can’t save anyone if we’re part of a mountain of rubble ourselves.
I watch as the wall crumbles further, sending more dust and debris into the chasm below. The rumbling grows louder, a deep, ominous sound that seems to vibrate right through my bones. Halie's words echo in my mind: "It's happening." I can feel the raw power radiating from the spirit, its energy coiling around us like a malevolent serpent.
My gaze darts between the newly revealed chamber and the swirling mist below. The greenish fog has started to take on a more solid form, writhing and twisting in the air as if alive. It's beautiful in a terrifying sort of way, and my academic curiosity wars with the sheer terror rising inside me. This is no ordinary spirit binding; it feels ancient, powerful, and utterly alien.
I turn to Jeane, who has been quietly observing the scene, her crimson eyes scanning the unstable structure with a critical engineer's gaze. "Jeane," I call out over the increasing noise of the collapsing wall, my voice strained but firm. "We can't just shore this up and leave. We need to get down there." I point towards the hidden chamber, where the strange pulsating light is now almost blindingly intense.
My mind races as I try to process everything happening around us. The binding symbols on the floor are losing their hold, the runes flickering like dying candles. It’s clear that the spirit is gaining strength by the second, its power fueled by the destruction of the tower itself.
"I think... I think it wants to be released," I say, my voice dropping to a low murmur as if speaking too loudly might make the situation worse. The idea is both terrifying and exhilarating. What secrets would a spirit this old possess? What dark knowledge could we uncover?
I take a step closer to the edge of the platform, peering down into the swirling mist. I can feel its pull now, a physical force tugging at my consciousness. It's like it's beckoning me, whispering promises of hidden wisdom and untold power. "But if we go in there without knowing what we're up against... it could be our undoing."
My hand tightens on the hilt of my mace, the cold metal a grounding presence in the midst of all this chaos. I look back at Halie and Merrin, seeing the fear and determination on their faces. "We have to make a choice," I say, my voice gaining a newfound resolve. The rumbling of the tower seems to fall away, replaced by a single, clear thought: we have to save our friends, and maybe, just maybe, uncover the truth of this place once and for all.
I square my shoulders, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. This is what I came for, isn't it? The chance to study magic beyond the safety of my books, to push the boundaries of what we know. And if it means facing something terrifyingly powerful... well, that's the risk a scholar has to take sometimes.
"I'm going in," I announce, my voice steady despite the tremor running through me. I look at Jeane and Merrin, a silent challenge passing between us. "Someone needs to secure the upper levels and make sure no one else gets trapped inside. But down here... this is where the real magic happens."
With that, I take a deep breath, summoning every ounce of courage I possess. I step onto the crumbling stones at the edge of the platform, my footing precarious. The mist swirls around my ankles, cool and damp against my skin. It feels like crossing a threshold, like stepping into a completely different world.
The air grows colder still as I move forward, the green light from the hidden chamber casting eerie shadows across the floor. Every instinct screams at me to turn back, to run for safety, but my mind is consumed by the single, driving thought: we have to know what’s happening here.
I raise my mace in a defensive stance, ready to face whatever lies ahead. Whether it be more spirits, ancient traps, or something even worse, I will find out the truth of this place. And if that means confronting the darkness itself... so be it. "Halie," I call over my shoulder, my voice echoing in the cavernous space. "Stay with me. We’re going to get Jeane and Merrin out of there."
The tower groans around us, a sound of ancient pain and impending collapse. But for now, the only thing that matters is the path ahead, the hidden chamber waiting to be explored, and the friends we need to save. I take another step forward, my resolve hardening with each passing second. This is our test, our trial by fire in the depths of this accursed tower.
