As Merrin speaks, her voice grows stronger, and the runes on her skin pulse more rapidly. The construct remains still, but its gaze shifts from Merrin to Halie and Jeane, its eyes burning with an otherworldly intensity. The air around them distorts further, as if reality itself is warping to accommodate Merrin's newfound power. Suddenly, the catwalk groans ominously beneath their feet, and the wooden beams creak in protest. Halie takes a step back, her hand instinctively reaching for the crossbow at her side. "We need to get off this catwalk," she says, her voice tight with concern. "Now."

The Keeper's spectral form begins to move closer, its eyes fixed on Merrin as it speaks in a voice that sends shivers down Jeane's spine. "The trial begins now," it intones. "Merrin, you must demonstrate your worthiness to join us."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's gaze narrows as she studies the shifting energies surrounding Merrin—and the ominous groaning of the catwalk beneath them. This isn't simple binding anymore; this is elevation through force.*

She takes a measured step forward, her wings instinctively half-spreading before settling back. "Merrin," she calls out, "if you can hear me—focus. Remember who we are to each other." The runes pulsing on Merrin's skin tell Jeane everything she needs to know: this binding isn't temporary, and whatever entity the Keeper represents, it doesn't give up its prizes easily.

To Halie: "Listen—the glow you see? Those aren't just marks. They're a system of control, like… like the sigils I use for my own bindings." She keeps her voice low as she gestures subtly at Merrin with one hand while maintaining an open stance toward the construct. "This is soul engineering, not possession. The Keeper's trying to promote her into something higher—and we need to figure out what that promotion requires before it's complete."

The catwalk creaks again, louder this time. Jeane shifts her weight carefully, testing each board. "And we have another problem: this whole structure is about to collapse." She glances upward—through the gap in the floor where Merrin fell, they can see the damaged upper level and the chasm below. "If we don't move soon, the fall might be the least of our worries."

Jeane's fingers curl around her arcane focus—a slender wand that feels both warm and alive under her touch. "Here's what I'm thinking: if this is a trial of worthiness, there must be rules. We need to figure out what those rules are and complete them before Merrin fully transitions." She meets Halie's eyes steadily. "And while we do that? We find a way off this catwalk that doesn't involve falling into the chasm or getting crushed by collapsing timber."

Her gaze flicks between Merrin, the construct, and the unstable floorboards. "I'll try to communicate with whatever's inside Merrin—find out what it knows about the trial requirements. You two," she nods at Halie and Seraphine, "secure us a path down or find something to reinforce this structure."

The runes on Merrin's skin pulse faster now, and her eyes glow brighter. "We don't have much time. Once she's fully integrated, we might not be able to reach her anymore." Jeane takes another careful step forward, her voice carrying through the unstable air. "Merrin—can you tell me what the Keeper wants? What does worthiness mean in this context?"

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I take a step back from Merrin's transformed figure, my hand instinctively moving to the crossbow at my side. The runes on her skin aren't just symbols—they're a system of control, each pulse a reminder that something else is wearing Merrin now.

The catwalk groans ominously beneath our feet. "We can’t stay here," I say, voice tight with urgency. "This whole structure will come down if we don't move soon." I glance around the chamber—there has to be another way out of this death trap.
