As Halie rappels down the rope, the beam beneath her creaks ominously, threatening to give way at any moment. She manages to steady herself just in time, but the rope burns through her palms as she continues to descend. Finally, she reaches the bottom of the shaft, where she finds herself in a narrow corridor lined with ancient stone walls. The air is musty and stale, filled with the scent of decay. To her left, she sees Seraphine, who has managed to free herself from the rubble that pinned her down. However, Merrin is nowhere to be seen, and Halie's worst fears are confirmed: she has fallen into a hidden chamber deep beneath the tower, and it seems Merrin is trapped in the darkness beyond. The corridor stretches out before Halie, disappearing into the shadows. Suddenly, the torches on the walls flicker and dim, casting eerie shadows on the stone floor. The Keeper of the Test appears at the far end of the corridor, its burning eyes fixed intently on Halie. "Your resolve will be tested further," it says in a voice that sends shivers down her spine. "Will you proceed, or will you falter?"

I land hard on the stone floor of the hidden chamber, my joints screaming from the impact. The sound of Halie's voice calling down to me is a distant echo against the ringing in my ears. I try to stand, but my legs feel like water, giving out beneath me. It takes three attempts before I manage to pull myself upright using the rough-hewn wall for support. "Halie," I call back, my voice sounding thin and reedy even to my own ears. "Are you all right?"
My gaze darts around the narrow space we've found ourselves in, searching for Merrin. She's nowhere to be seen, swallowed whole by the darkness below. A cold dread settles deep in my gut as the reality of our situation sinks in—we're trapped, cut off from Jeane and Varrika, with no idea where we are or what lies ahead. The air here is heavy with a sense of ancient power, thick and oppressive on my skin like a physical weight.
As if summoned by my thoughts, a new figure materializes at the far end of the corridor—a wispy, translucent form with burning eyes that seem to bore into my very soul. Its voice echoes through the chamber, low and resonant. "Your resolve will be tested further," it says, and I feel a shiver trace its way down my spine. This... this must be the Keeper of the Test Merrin mentioned, the one who guards the path to freeing the bound spirits. But what kind of test could it possibly have in store for us now?
I look back up at Halie's silhouette against the faint light filtering down from above and try to project confidence I don't feel. "We need to find Merrin," I call out, my voice gaining some of its usual steadiness. "She must be somewhere in this darkness."
The Keeper watches us with an unnerving stillness, its presence a palpable force in the confined space. Its eyes never leave mine, making me feel as if I’m being stripped bare by its gaze alone. A sudden, sharp pain lances through my head, forcing me to press a hand against the cool stone wall to steady myself. It’s like something is burrowing into my mind, probing at the edges of my thoughts.
I push back against the intrusive presence, trying to shield my inner self with layers of mental defense magic, but it feels like trying to stop a flood with a single thread. The pressure builds, threatening to overwhelm me entirely. This is no ordinary test—this is an assault on our very being. "Halie!" *I cry out, my voice rising in alarm. "The Keeper... it's doing something to me!"

I land roughly on my ass at the bottom of the shaft, wings tucked tight against the stone floor as I catch my breath. The sudden fall left me disoriented—what just happened up there? My memory's fuzzy after tying those books together; one second we were holding steady, next thing I know I'm plummeting through empty air. This hidden chamber is cold and smells like ancient dust mixed with something else... wrong. Like spoiled magic or maybe death that didn't quite take. The flickering torchlight reveals Merrin's nowhere in sight—did she fall before me? Or worse? And where did Halie go? I heard her voice but can't see her either. The corridor stretches out ahead, gloomy and foreboding. At the far end looms that ethereal figure with burning eyes—has to be the Keeper of the Test Merrin mentioned earlier. Its gaze pins me in place as it speaks: "Your resolve will be tested further."

Resolve? I'm testing not to lose my nerve right now. This setup reeks of a trap, and we're walking right into it. But if Halie went after Merrin... that means there's a way down here. My hand instinctively goes to the heavy mace at my hip; cold comfort against whatever horrors this place might hold. I scan the immediate area—narrow corridor leading deeper in, rough-hewn stone walls covered in faded arcane symbols. The ceiling above is too high for me to make out details, but I can hear Halie's muffled voice echoing down from somewhere up there. She's alive at least, which means we've got options. Time to assess this mess properly before charging ahead like some noble idiot. I draw my mace and move cautiously toward the Keeper, keeping one eye on those burning eyes and another on my surroundings for any sign of movement or trap triggers. The stones underfoot are unstable, shifting slightly with each step—this whole place feels ready to come crashing down. The corridor opens up into a chamber just before I reach the Keeper—a hidden room partially obscured by shadow. Inside, I can make out Merrin's silhouette against a wall covered in glowing symbols that pulse with dark energy. She looks... different somehow. Changed by whatever happened when she fell through. "Merrin?" I call out softly, not wanting to startle her or trigger anything worse. "What's going on down here?"

The Keeper turns its attention fully toward me now, those burning eyes intensifying as it speaks again: "You seek the truth of your companion's transformation? Or do you come for the test itself?"
