Merrin squinted at the faint glow Varrika pointed out, her gaze narrowing as she tried to make out more details through the thick underbrush. The air here felt wrong, charged with some ancient, malevolent energy. Every snap of a twig or rustle of leaves made her jump, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Unresolved tensions: Skeletons: Undead remnants of the tower's original defenders, now animated by dark magi...

Important people/items/threats: NPCs: Elric, The Hermit, The Bound Spirit (female in tattered robes with coal-black eyes and deathful pale skin)

The surrounding forest was known for its supernatural activity and could harbor additional threats. Merrin's fingers tightened around the hilt of her mace, the cool metal a familiar comfort.

Seraphine watched as Halie reached out toward the spirit, her heart clenching in her chest. Merrin was right—she didn't know what they were dealing with here. But there was something about that light, a strange pull that felt almost... familiar.

It was like a memory just out of reach, a spell she half-remembered studying in some long-forgotten tome. The acrid scent grew stronger as the blue light pulsed, and she...

The air around them seemed to vibrate with residual magic, and the symbols began to pulse with a soft, blue light.

The Bound Spirit's voice whispered in their minds, "The test of worthiness is not for the brave, but for those who seek wisdom. Follow the light, and you may find what you seek."

Merrin | Rogue
I grab Halie's arm before she can reach out further, my heart pounding as I pull her back. "Halie, wait!" I hiss under my breath, "We don't know what that thing is capable of. It could be trying to pull us into its realm or something worse." My eyes dart to the glowing symbols on the ground, their pulsing light making my skin crawl. *Jeane's right—we need more information before we just...

I watch as Halie reaches out toward the spirit, my heart clenching in my chest. Merrin is right—we don't know what we're dealing with here. But there's something about that light, a strange pull that feels almost... familiar. It's like a memory just out of reach, a spell I half-remember studying in some long-forgotten tome. *The acrid scent grows stronger as the blue light pulses, and I...

The Bound Spirit's voice fills their minds once more, "I can feel your fear, little ones. But know this: the true test lies not in what you do, but in what you choose. The path ahead is fraught with peril, yes—but so too is the path behind." The symbols on the ground intensify, casting eerie shadows that dance across the stone walls. "Now, tell me—what brings such a... diverse group to my ancient prison? Surely not mere curiosity?"

Merrin | Rogue
I exchange a wary glance with Seraphine, then speak up carefully, "We seek the legendary Time-Splitting Sword. Rumor says it's hidden within this tower." I keep my hand on my mace, ready to draw if needed. "But we're not here to cause trouble. We just want to help free you and move on."

The Bound Spirit's laughter echoes through their minds, "Ah, the Time-Splitting Sword! Such a powerful artifact, wielded by heroes of old." The symbols pulse again, casting flickering blue light across Merrin's face. "But tell me, little halfling—do you truly understand what releasing such a weapon into the world might mean? The power to split time itself... it is a tool that could reshape history, for good or ill."

Seraphine | Wizard
I step forward, my curiosity overcoming my fear for a moment. "We... we don't fully comprehend its capabilities. But we believe it could help restore balance to our world." I hesitate, then add, "And perhaps... free you from this prison?"

The Bound Spirit's voice softens slightly, "Balance? Such a fleeting concept, my dear elf. The world has always been in flux, shifting between order and chaos." The symbols on the ground begin to rotate slowly, forming new patterns. "But very well—I sense no true malice in your hearts. Yet know this: the tower before you is riddled with traps both magical and mundane. Many have come seeking the sword... few have left alive."

Merrin | Rogue
I feel a chill run down my spine at the spirit's words. "What kind of traps are we talking about?" I ask, my eyes scanning the crumbling walls for any sign of danger.

The Bound Spirit chuckles darkly, "Oh, the usual sorts. Spikes that spring from the floor, arrows that fly from hidden quivers, and... let's just say the tower has a particular fondness for gravity-defying drops." The symbols stop rotating and begin to fade slowly. "But fear not—if you are truly worthy, you will find your path unobstructed. If not... well, the tower has had plenty of practice at consuming the unwary."

Seraphine | Wizard
I step closer to Merrin, my voice barely above a whisper, "We should document this conversation. The magical binding patterns could be valuable for future study." I begin to sketch the fading symbols in my spellbook, my hand trembling slightly.

The Bound Spirit's voice grows fainter as the symbols dim further, "Farewell, seekers of the sword. Remember—true worthiness lies not in strength or magic, but in the choices you make." The air around them begins to clear of its acrid scent. "And do be careful on the catwalk... the skeletons below have been quite... restless lately."

Merrin | Rogue
I nod grimly at Seraphine's suggestion, then turn back to the fading symbols. "Thank you for the... warning." I mutter, not sure if it was truly helpful or just another layer of foreboding.

The Bound Spirit's laughter echoes once more, "Oh, and one last thing—should you happen upon a particularly ornate dagger in your travels, do try not to stab yourself with it. The tower's previous owners were quite... fond of their little surprises."

Seraphine | Wizard
I finish my sketch just as the symbols vanish completely, letting out a slow breath. "Well, that was... enlightening." I look up at Merrin, "At least we know what to expect now. Sort of."

Merrin | Rogue
I can't help but grin despite the situation. "Yeah, 'sort of' is about right. Come on—let's get across this catwalk before those skeletons decide to have a midnight snack." I start forward cautiously, my eyes fixed on the ground for any sign of traps.

Seraphine | Wizard
I follow Merrin, my staff at the ready. "And keep an eye out for that 'ornate dagger.' Wouldn't want to accidentally trigger some ancient curse."

The two women move forward slowly, their hearts still pounding from the encounter. The tower looms above them, silent and watchful, as they begin their careful ascent across the crumbling catwalk.

Merrin | Rogue
I pause mid-step, my eyes widening as I spot something glinting in the gloom ahead. "Seraphine—look there." I point to a dark shape half-buried in the stone. "Is that... a dagger?"

Seraphine | Wizard
I squint at the object Merrin pointed out, my heart skipping a beat. "It certainly looks like one. But remember what the spirit said..." I hesitate, then sigh, "Alright, I'll investigate. If it's booby-trapped, my shield spell might protect me better than your leather armor."

Merrin | Rogue
I nod reluctantly, stepping back to give Seraphine room. "Be careful. And if you start glowing or floating or anything weird, just... run away quickly?"

Seraphine | Wizard
I can't help but roll my eyes as I approach the dagger cautiously, my shield spell already humming with arcane energy around me. "I'll keep that in mind." I reach out slowly, using the tip of my staff to carefully prod at the object.

The dagger shifts slightly under my prodding, and suddenly—

CLANG!

A hidden spring mechanism triggers, and a shower of small stones rains down from above. Seraphine yelps and throws up her arms protectively, but the shield spell flares brightly, deflecting most of the projectiles.

Merrin | Rogue
I curse under my breath and lunge forward, grabbing Seraphine's arm to pull her back. "Are you okay? That was way too close for comfort."

Seraphine | Wizard
I'm breathing heavily, my heart racing, but I manage a shaky laugh. "I'm fine. See? Useful shield spell." I look up at the spot where the stones fell from, my expression turning serious. "But this is exactly what the spirit meant. We need to be even more careful now—this tower isn't going to give up its secrets easily."

Merrin | Rogue
I nod grimly, scanning our surroundings for any other immediate threats. "Agreed. Let's document this trap and keep moving. The faster we find the sword—or at least some clue about it—the sooner we can get out of this place."

Seraphine | Wizard
I pull out my spellbook again, quickly sketching the mechanism and noting its location. "Good thinking. And maybe next time, I'll just... kick the suspicious objects from a distance?"

The two women exchange a look, sharing a moment of nervous laughter before turning back to the treacherous path ahead.

Merrin | Rogue
I start forward once more, my eyes never leaving the ground. "Stay close. And if you see any more shiny objects, just... point and keep walking."

Seraphine | Wizard
I follow, my staff held ready, occasionally glancing up at the looming tower walls with a mix of academic curiosity and genuine apprehension.

The catwalk stretches out before them, a precarious path through darkness and danger. But they press on, driven by the weight of their quest and the echoes of ancient power that seem to hum in the very stones around them.
