As I finish speaking, Halie rises from her knees, her eyes closed in deep prayer. After a moment, she opens them, her gaze steady and resolute. "I see a vision of a path winding through the forest, lit by torches that seem to burn with an otherworldly flame," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "It leads to a small clearing, where a figure cloaked in shadows awaits. I sense that this figure holds the key to unlocking the tower's secrets, but I also feel a deep sense of trepidation about approaching them."

I nod, my mind racing with possibilities. "That sounds like the kind of guidance we need," I say, turning to Varrika. "What's your plan for scouting out the perimeter? Can you find any other entrances or weaknesses in the tower's defenses?"

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I rise from my knees, my mind grappling with the vision I just received. A path through the woods? And someone waiting in shadows? I glance around the circle of my companions, their faces illuminated by the flickering torchlight. This... this could be dangerous. But we didn't come all this way to turn back now. My fingers trace the silver cross at my neck, seeking comfort in its familiar shape. We need to think this through carefully. If Halie's vision is true—and I believe it is—then we're dealing with something ancient and powerful. Something that might not take kindly to trespassers. I turn to Merrin, her daggers glinting in the firelight. Your skills as a scout would be invaluable here. But be careful—this forest could hold more dangers than we know. And Merrin... I pause, my voice softening, don't act alone. Whatever's out there, it might require more than just your blade. My eyes move to Seraphine next. Your knowledge of the arcane could shed light on whatever lies ahead. But if this entity deals in dark magic, we may need to tread carefully. Perhaps a protective spell? Or some way to test the waters before diving in? Finally, I look at Jeane, her crimson eyes already glowing with barely contained power. Your might and magic are our greatest assets. But even you must be cautious—we don't know what kind of traps or creatures await us on this path. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what comes next. We're all in this together. Whatever lies ahead, we face it as one. But first... I turn back to the chasm, the dark energy still swirling within its depths, we need to decide if Halie's vision is guidance or a warning. My mind races with possibilities and doubts, but beneath it all, I know we can't stay here forever. Someone needs to investigate this path. But who? And how? I turn back to the group, my expression serious. What say you all? Do we follow this vision? Or do we seek another way?

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I stare into that chasm of swirling darkness for a long moment, my wings twitching with barely contained impatience. "Enough theorizing," I say sharply, cutting through the tension like a blade through silk. Halie's vision might be guidance—might be—but we're dancing on the edge of a knife here while the tower breathes down our necks. Every second spent arguing probabilities is another second wasted. I turn to Merrin, my crimson eyes boring into hers as I make a decision that feels right even as it sends a shiver down my spine. "Merrin, Halie's vision isn't just a possibility—it's our best lead." My voice drops into that dangerous tone I reserve for moments when obedience is expected. "You and Seraphine will scout the path through the woods. Merrin because your eyes can spot a trap from across the room, and Seraphine because if there's magic involved, she'll sniff it out faster than a hound on a scent."

I turn to Varrika then, my expression unreadable but my words carrying weight. "Varrika, you're with me. We're going to test that damned window Halie saw." The words taste bitter even as I say them—walking into what's obviously a trap feels like signing our own death warrants—but the alternative is sitting here in the cold while our prey gets away or grows stronger. "We'll use my magic to create a protective bubble around us, small enough that we can move quickly but big enough to shield against whatever nasty surprises wait inside." I flex my fingers unconsciously as if already drawing power. "And Halie..." My gaze softens fractionally when it meets hers. "You stay here with Varrika's backup. If we disappear or something goes wrong, you're our last line of defense. Use that holy symbol of yours to create a ward around this area—something strong enough to hold off whatever might come after us if things go sideways." I don't say what we both know: that if the wards fail and Halie falls, there won't be anyone left to save her. As the others prepare to move out according to my instructions, I find myself wondering not for the first time whether this is a mistake. We're spread thin now—separated by terrain and shadows—and each group vulnerable in its own way. But sometimes leadership means making the best of bad options, and right now, this feels like the best option we've got. So I take a deep breath that does nothing to steady my nerves and say simply, "Move out."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a chill run down my spine at Jeane's command, but I know she's right. We can't afford to waste time with more debate when the tower seems to be pressing in around us.
"I agree," I say, my voice firm despite the unease gnawing at my stomach. "Merrin and I will scout the path, just as you suggested." I turn to Merrin, giving her a small, reassuring smile. "Stick close, okay? We're going to need all our senses about us out there."
My eyes flick back to the swirling darkness in the chasm, then up to the ominous facade of the tower. So much unknown power concentrated in one place—it’s both terrifying and exhilarating. "Be careful," I call after Jeane and Varrika as they begin their preparations. "And remember what Halie said—that spirit is testing us. Don't let it lead you into anything too... final."
With that, I turn to Merrin, my expression growing more serious. "Let's find that path. And whatever we do, keep your eyes peeled for traps. I have a feeling this forest isn’t going to be as welcoming as it looks." I take a deep breath, trying to steady the sudden rush of adrenaline coursing through me, then begin moving toward the edge of the clearing where the trees await.*
