The dust settled in thick layers across what remained of the corridor, each breath drawing more of the ancient building's decay into their lungs. The tower groaned around them like a beast waking from long sleep, rubble shifting with every rumble that shook the foundation. Jeane stood near the partially collapsed wall section, her dark leather-clad form tense as she scanned for any sign of structural weakness or—worse—new threats emerging from the shadows. Her crimson eyes gleamed in the dim light cast by flickering torches set at intervals along the walls, each flame guttering as if fighting against an unseen wind.

"This whole place is a death trap," she muttered, more to herself than her companions. "We need to find the heart of this tower and figure out how to shut it down before it collapses us into its own grave." Seraphine moved closer to examine a section of crumbling wall, her dark elegant hair catching the torchlight as she leaned in. Her fingers traced the stonework carefully, searching for any sign of structural integrity or hidden mechanisms.

"Every spell I cast feels like pushing a boulder uphill," the wizard admitted, straightening. "This corruption isn't just magical—it's in the very stone itself now." Halie pressed herself against the cold wall opposite Jeane, her fingers tracing the edge of her silver cross necklace—a small comfort in this place where even prayer seemed to echo back hollowly. The corridor groaned again, louder this time, and a section of ceiling above them began to crack.

"Everyone cover your heads!" Jeane shouted, already moving to shield Halie with her own body as a massive chunk of rubble came crashing down the corridor behind them. The dust exploded outward from the impact site, thick and choking. Seraphine's counter-spell faltered as she struggled to maintain its containment, her face showing the strain of fighting against an impossible weight.

The purple glow from deeper within the tower began to falter, and Jeane's reinforced sections started to shudder ominously. The air grew colder as the structural collapse accelerated, and the ground beneath their feet trembled with increasing frequency. A faint whispering seemed to fill the corridor—words in a language long forgotten, carried on the dust-laden air.

"We need out of this collapsing tomb before we become permanent residents," Jeane growled, focusing her sight past the physical collapse into the arcane signature. "The magic holding this place together is unraveling like rotting thread. The heart chamber we just found—it's the source, but it's too unstable to work with directly." She glanced at Halie, then back to Seraphine. "Unless either of you have a brilliant idea for reinforcing collapsing stonework with divine magic or arcane theory?"

Halie met Jeane's gaze, her blue-grey eyes wide with barely controlled panic. "I can feel it—the despair in this place is like nothing I've encountered before." She clutched her cross tighter. "But you're right—we need to keep moving down if we want to stop this thing." The young woman took a deep breath, steeling herself. "Let me help with those anchors. My blessing might not be enough to save us all, but it's better than nothing."

Seraphine shook her head, already moving toward the partially collapsed wall section. "The corruption... it's not just about the tower anymore," she gasped out, struggling to catch her breath. "Every spell I cast feels like pushing a boulder uphill. The magical signature is changing—it's becoming part of the stone itself now." She leaned in closer, examining the ancient runes etched into the crumbling masonry.

"What are you doing?" Jeane demanded, moving to stand beside her. "We don't have time for historical research—this entire fucking tower is coming down around our ears."

The wizard glanced back, her sharp eyes gleaming with determination despite the dust coating her face. "I'm not researching—I'm looking for structural integrity," she explained quickly. "If we can find even one stable section, I might be able to reinforce it magically. Buy us some time." Her fingers traced a particularly complex rune pattern. "Here—this section seems... stronger than the rest."
