The tower's ancient stone breathes around them, each groan a promise of imminent collapse. Seraphine descends the hidden stairway, her footsteps echoing in the oppressive silence. The air grows colder, thicker, saturated with an energy that crawls across exposed skin like tiny insects. At the bottom, she finds herself in a chamber bathed in shadows—her torch flickers, casting dancing specters on crumbling walls adorned with more of those damned inverse runes.

She calls out, her voice barely a whisper: "Halie? Can you hear me?" The sound dies instantly, swallowed by the darkness. Something shifts in the corridor ahead—a heavy scraping noise, slow and deliberate. Seraphine's fingers tighten around her staff, every muscle coiled for flight or fight. She takes a step back, her gaze fixed on the darkness from which the sound emanates.

In the heart of the tower, Jeane struggles to maintain control over the inverse rune beneath her feet. The magic pulses erratically, each beat drawing more ambient corruption into its vortex. Her wings beat harder, propelling herself higher as she searches for a safe perch above the collapsing floor. The strain shows in the tightness of her jaw, the way her horns seem to glow with exertion.

"Varrika! Merrin!" She calls down, her voice strained. "The structural integrity is failing—we need to find a way to stabilize this before we're all buried alive!" Below, Varrika's hammer continues its tireless work against the endless tide of skeletons, each strike echoing through the crumbling stone. Merrin stands guard near the entrance, her crossbow ready, eyes scanning for any sign of movement in the darkness beyond.

Halie moves deeper into the left corridor, her torch held out like a shield. The air here is different—old death and something else, something ancient and powerful. The corridor opens into a chamber dominated by a massive stone altar at its center, covered in inverse runes that pulse with the same rhythm as the ones below. She approaches cautiously, her holy symbol clutched tightly in her free hand.

"This feels wrong," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "Too much power concentrated in one place." The stones around the altar shift slightly as she speaks, and a low rumble echoes through the chamber. Halie takes an instinctive step back, her eyes widening as she realizes what she's stumbled upon.

In the depths below, Seraphine finds herself face to face with an ancient figure—a wizened old man with piercing eyes that seem to bore straight through her. He stands motionless, his presence filling the corridor with an aura of immense power and barely contained rage. Seraphine freezes, her staff raised defensively.

"Who... who are you?" she stammers, her voice barely audible over the pounding of her own heart. The figure doesn't respond immediately—if he even heard her at all. When he finally speaks, his voice echoes with the weight of centuries: "You trespass where no living thing should tread. Leave now, or join the others in eternal slumber."

Seraphine's mind races, weighing the odds of teleporting away against the possibility that such an action might trigger even more of the tower's defenses. She takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself.

"We mean no harm," she says, her voice steadier now. "We seek only to right the wrongs done here—to restore balance." The figure's eyes narrow, and for a moment, Seraphine thinks she sees a flicker of something—hope? desperation?—in their depths.

"You cannot restore what was never meant to be," he says, taking a step forward. "The power here is beyond your comprehension—a thing created in ignorance and maintained through suffering." His gaze sweeps over her, assessing. "Leave now, while you still can. The tower's heart is not something mortals should disturb."

Seraphine feels the weight of his words pressing down on her, but she also senses the desperation beneath them. This being—whatever he is—knows more than he's saying. She takes a measured step forward, her staff held ready.

"What happened here?" she asks, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why does this place feel so... wrong?"

The figure's expression darkens further, and for a moment, Seraphine thinks she's made a mistake. But then he speaks again, his voice heavy with ancient sorrow: "This was meant to be a sanctuary—a place of healing and learning. But the fool who built it sought power beyond his understanding, and the price was... immense." He gestures around them at the crumbling walls and pulsing runes. "The magic here twisted, feeding on pain and suffering until it became something else entirely. A monster that consumes all in its path."

Seraphine listens intently, her mind working furiously to process this information. If what he's saying is true—and her instincts scream that it is—then they're dealing with something far more dangerous than mere dark magic or trapped corridors.

"How can we stop it?" she asks, her voice tight with determination. The figure studies her for a long moment before responding, his eyes seeming to peer into her very soul.

"There is a chamber deep within the tower's heart—a place where the original magic was bound." He gestures towards a shadowy corridor that branches off to their left. "You must find it and break the seal that contains the power. But be warned—once unleashed, there will be no going back. The magic will either consume you all or... find its true purpose once more."

Seraphine feels a shiver run down her spine at his words. This is exactly what she was hoping to find—a way to truly neutralize the tower's power—but the stakes are now painfully clear.

"I understand," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "We'll do what needs to be done." The figure nods solemnly before turning away and disappearing into the shadows as suddenly as he appeared. Seraphine takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come.

"Halie!" she calls out, her voice echoing in the chamber. "I think I've found something—we need to talk."
