The air in the hidden passage grows heavy and cold as Seraphine descends the narrow stairs behind Halie, her torch flickering ominously in the gloom. Each stone step groans under their weight as if protesting the intrusion, ancient dust swirling with every footfall to catch the weak light. The walls here are smoother than those above—carefully crafted rather than roughly hewn—but the magic clinging to them feels wrong, like oil on water trying to mix with something pure.

Halie's breath fogs in front of her face as she reaches the bottom, her free hand clutching the useless silver cross around her neck. The corridor stretches ahead into darkness, the air growing thicker and more oppressive with every step deeper inside. She can feel it—the wrongness seeping through the stone like water through cloth, each breath drawing more of the corruption into her lungs.

"Something's down here," Seraphine hums, her sharp eyes scanning the shadows where the torchlight fails to reach. "Old magic. Darker than the wards above—this feels... alive." Her fingers tighten around her spell components, the arcane symbols etched on them seeming to glow faintly in the dim light.

The sound of collapsing stone echoes down from above—a loud crack followed by a rumble that shakes dust from the ceiling. Halie stumbles backward instinctively, her heart pounding. "Jeane—please—if you can hear me, don't come down here!" Her voice echoes off the stone walls, sounding both too loud and too small in the enclosed space.

Seraphine places a hand on Halie's shoulder, steadying her. "We need to move forward," she says, her voice tight but controlled. "The tower's heart—whatever that means—must be close." She takes another step into the darkness, her free hand extended palm-up as if feeling for magical currents in the air.

The corridor opens up ahead into what looks like a chamber, the faint blue glow of arcane energy visible around its edge. Halie swallows hard, the sound echoing loudly in her own ears. "What do we know about this place?" she asks, more to break the silence than for any real hope of an answer.

Seraphine shakes her head slowly. "Nothing certain," she admits. "The stories spoke of a tower that could split time—perhaps whatever powers that magic is housed here." She moves closer to Halie, her voice dropping to a whisper. "But if this is the heart... then what's pumping the blood?"
