As the violet glow of the gate's magic fades, the skeletal guardian's skull tilts slightly, its empty eye sockets fixed on Jeane with an unnerving intensity. The air around it crackles with energy, and the ground shudders beneath its feet as it takes a step forward, its bony hand extended towards her. The heavy stone panel behind it creaks ominously, as if warning of the power that lies beyond. The sound of scraping metal echoes from the corridor ahead, followed by the faint whisper of shadowy wings beating against the darkness. Jeane's red eyes narrow, her gaze darting between the guardian and the portal, her hand still crackling with dark energy.

I slide my hand into my pocket and pull out a small, ornate lockpick set. My fingers move nimbly as I examine the gate's magical wards. "Well, well, ain't this a pretty pickle we're in," I mutter, more to myself than anyone else. "Skeletal guardian, ancient magic, and now you two lookin' ready to throw down..." I shake my head and flash a wry smile at Halie and Jeane. "Let's see if we can't find a way through without riling up the whole tower, yeah?"

With a deft motion, I extend the pick and begin probing the runes, looking for any weakness or flaw I can exploit. "Keep the big baddies at bay while I work here," I call over my shoulder. "And Halie, if you got any prayers to keep our bony friend here from goin' full rampage mode, now's the time!"

I dismiss my shadow wings with a flick of my wrist, letting them dissipate into smoke. My eyes remain fixed on the skeletal guardian's empty sockets as I circle it slowly, maintaining distance but observing every detail. Halie, your caution is noted—useful even—but this isn't our fears made manifest. It's a trap component, an automated response to magical probing. I stop and trace one of the runes with my fingertip, not touching it directly; I can feel the dark energy pulsing beneath my skin. The sigils here... they're older than I thought. Pre-human craftsmanship, likely demonic binding magic repurposed for guardianship. I glance at Merrin and Varrika, then back to the skeleton. You have three seconds to tell me what you see before I make this thing's day very unpleasant. My free hand begins to glow with dark purple energy—a controlled display of power, not yet directed—but I keep it low, held casually at my side. The guardian shifts again, responding to my increased magical presence. Merrin, are those lock mechanisms mechanical or arcane? Because if you try to pick something that's bound magically and I haven't properly... un-bound it first, we're going from annoyed skeleton to very angry shadow demons. I step closer to the gate itself now, reading the runes with growing interest despite the obvious danger. This could be useful information. The language—it references a binding contract between... something ancient and whoever built this tower originally. I look over my shoulder at Seraphine. If you were going to bind demonic power to guard your door, what kind of contract would you write? My intention is clear: I'm not backing down, but I'm also not rushing blindly ahead. I need more information before forcing the issue, and I'll use whatever means available—social pressure, magical analysis, or raw demonstration of power—to get it.
