The skeletal remains of the tower's defenders shamble closer, their empty sockets fixed on Varrika as she hefts Merrin's unconscious form toward the yawning darkness of the hidden tunnel. The air is heavy with the stench of death and decay, and the ground beneath Varrika's feet seems to tremble with the weight of ancient secrets. As Seraphine works to stabilize Merrin's fragile form, Jeane's fireball spell casts eerie shadows on the walls of the pit, making it seem as though the very stones themselves are twisting in agony. The skeletons, now mere yards away, slow their approach, their jerky movements taking on a more deliberate, almost calculating quality. "We need to move, now!" Varrika growls, her eyes locked on the tunnel entrance. "If we don't get Merrin out of here, she'll be—"

A low, ominous rumble echoes through the pit, making the ground shudder beneath their feet. The skeletons halt their advance, their heads cocked to one side as if listening to some distant, unseen signal. The rumbling grows louder, and the air begins to distort with a faint, magical energy.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

As the ground shook around me, I froze in place halfway down that damned tunnel. The rumbling from above sounded like the whole cursed tower was about to come crashing down—probably exactly what those skeletons wanted, the bastards. My fireball spell flickered ominously as vibrations traveled through the stone walls. "Varrika!" I called back up the tunnel. "What in the nine hells is happening? Is Merrin—"

My words were cut off by a loud crack from above, followed by Seraphine's panicked voice echoing down to me.

"Jeane! The pit collapsed—Halie was caught beneath debris! We had to drag her out and now we're trapped with the skeletons closing in!"

I cursed under my breath, torn between my instinct to flee and the knowledge that abandoning them wasn't an option. My wings twitched restlessly as I tried to think through our options. "Where's Merrin?" I shouted back. "Is she safe? What about Varrika—she didn't take on all three skeletons alone, did she?"

The silence that followed was answer enough. I should have known better than to trust those ancient wards—they were probably designed to collapse if anyone tampered with them too much. "Listen," I called up. "Stay together and move toward my voice! The tunnel's narrow here but it should give you some cover from the skeletons at least!"

As I waited for a response, I held out my free hand and began muttering an incantation. A faint blue glow emanated from my palm—an illumination spell to make navigating this damn passage easier.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I frantically beckon Jeane's voice down the tunnel, my heart pounding in my chest as I try to keep Merrin's head from hitting the rough stone floor. Varrika is right behind me, her mace held at the ready as she scans the narrowing passageway for any sign of movement. "We're coming!" I call back, my voice echoing off the damp walls. "Halie was hurt in the collapse—she might have a head injury. Can you see anything up ahead? Is it safe?"

As I speak, I cast a quick healing spell on myself, hoping to replenish some of my drained mana reserves. The spell is weak, but it helps to alleviate some of the exhaustion gripping my limbs. My eyes dart between Merrin's unconscious form and Varrika's tense posture, trying to gauge how much longer we can last like this. "Varrika," I whisper urgently, "we need to get Merrin out of here fast. That collapse was no accident—this whole place is coming apart at the seams."
