Round 14

Phase: escalating

The tower's ancient magic pulsed faster with every second that passed, the wards around the pit growing stronger by the moment. Merrin’s screams had stopped echoing up from below—the sudden silence was far more terrifying than her cries had been. Jeane knew they didn't have much time left before whatever was powering those runes finished its work down in the depths. She needed to find a way to break through the magical barrier, and fast.
Halie felt a chill run down her spine as she watched the symbols on the pressure plates begin to glow with an ominous light. This was bad—very bad. The last thing they needed was for this trap to activate something even worse than what Merrin was already facing. She turned to Elric, her voice tight with urgency. "We need to know what those runes do before we try anything else," she insisted. "If there's a way to disable them safely, we have to find it."
Varrika ground her teeth in frustration as she watched Jeane and Halie argue over the best course of action. They didn't have time for this—their friend was trapped down in that pit, and every second counted. She knew better than most how quickly situations could spiral out of control when lives were on the line. The dwarf warrior's hand instinctively went to the hilt of her axe, fingers tightening around the worn leather grip as she forced herself to stay put instead of rushing blindly into danger.
Seraphine felt a wave of dizziness wash over her as she completed her spell, the magical energy crackling and popping around them before dissipating into the stale air of the tower. She hadn't expected such a violent reaction—it seemed the wards were far more deeply embedded in the stone than she'd initially thought. As the dust settled from the explosion, she could see that the obsidian anchor stone had been destroyed, but at great cost. The entire structure of the ward was destabilizing now, its magical energy lashing out in unpredictable patterns.
"Jeane!" Seraphine called out, her voice barely audible over the groaning of shifting stones above them. "Those aren't just symbols—" She broke off as another tremor shook the tower, sending more dust raining down from the ceiling. They needed to act fast if they wanted to survive whatever was happening here.
