The chamber's air grew thick with anticipation as the party was forced into a moment of tense silence. Jeane moved closer to the edge of the pit, her crimson eyes scanning the symbols on the pressure plates below. The runes were pulsing faster now—Merrin's struggling was feeding their dark power. This wasn't just a trap; it was a machine designed to harvest life force.

"Seraphine," she called out, her voice sharp with urgency, "those runes—they're not just symbols. They're sigils for binding and extraction." The pattern reminded her of something she'd seen in the forbidden tomes back home. "If we trigger them wrong..."

Halie stood there for a moment, her eyes fixed on Merrin clinging to that bar over the abyss. The cold stone of the tower felt like it was pressing in around them. This whole place screamed wrongness—ancient magic twisted into something hungry and cruel.

Seraphine nodded sharply at Jeane's analysis, her mind already racing through possible solutions. "A responsive sequence... that could be our key." She turned to Varrika, who was still holding the blessed chain. "Varrika, throw Merrin that chain! We can use it to pull her up if we have to." But that won't solve the trap, she thought, her gaze darting back to the pulsing runes. We need to disable this thing completely. She focused on the magic again, trying to trace its flow through the stones of the floor. It was a complex system, designed to feed off fear and suffering...

Varrika listened to the rapid exchange of ideas, her mind racing through the options. Merrin's muffled cries were getting weaker—we don't have much time left. "Seraphine, Jeane - work on that spell," she barked, trusting in their magical expertise. "Halie, get ready with your holy energy. We might need it." She grabbed the blessed chain and moved to the edge of the pit. The runes were pulsing faster now, almost frantic in their hunger. She could feel the ancient magic pressing against her skin, eager to consume more life force...

The chamber seemed to hold its breath as the party prepared to make their next move. The air crackled with barely contained power, and the shadows around them seemed to deepen, watching with unseen eyes.
