Seraphine's fingers twitched as she felt the lingering heat from their contact, her sharp gaze fixed on the crystal pool where their reflections had merged moments before. The chamber air still hummed with residual magic, and she could feel the ghostly echoes of Jeane's thoughts brushing against the edges of her own mind—a sensation both unsettling and oddly comforting. When she spoke, her voice was low and measured, betraying none of the inner turmoil roiling beneath the surface.
"Testing this connection... it seems prudent," Seraphine began, each word chosen with careful deliberation. "If we are truly bound now, understanding the nature of that bond could prove crucial." She paused, her keen eyes never leaving Jeane's face as she gauged the other woman's reaction. "But perhaps we should proceed cautiously. The magic here feels... ancient. Untamed. I would not wish to invite further complications by careless experimentation."
Jeane stood motionless, her crimson eyes fixed on Seraphine with an intensity that made the wizardess feel exposed despite the layers of robes between them. When she finally spoke, her voice carried a raw edge that sent a shiver down Seraphine's spine.
"The magic feels right," Jeane said slowly, each word measured as if she was testing them aloud for the first time. "Like... like completing a puzzle I didn't know was missing pieces." She flexed her fingers, watching tiny sparks dance between them before fading away. "But you're right. Careless isn't something we can afford down here."
The two women stood in silence for long moments, the air between them charged with unspoken tension and the lingering echoes of shared power. Around them, the crystal walls seemed to pulse faintly, as if the very chamber itself was holding its breath.
"Then let us approach this cautiously," Seraphine proposed at last, her voice barely above a whisper. "Perhaps we can begin by simply... observing the effects? Without actively attempting to manipulate or test the connection further?" She took a small step closer to Jeane, drawn by an instinct she couldn't quite name. "After all, we are already connected in ways I do not fully understand. Perhaps merely standing here together is enough for now."
Jeane's expression remained unreadable as she considered Seraphine's words, the silence stretching between them like a taut wire. Finally, she nodded once—a brief dip of her chin that seemed to signal acceptance rather than agreement.
"Observation it is," Jeane replied, her voice tight but steady. "But keep your guard up. This place... it feels wrong somehow. Like standing inside someone else's dream." She glanced around the chamber, her gaze lingering on the still-glowing runes before returning to Seraphine. "And whatever Khaos intended by sending us here... I doubt it was for tea and pleasant conversation."
Seraphine felt a flicker of unease at the reminder of their mysterious benefactor—or perhaps patron—whose true nature remained as elusive as ever. But she pushed the thought aside, focusing instead on the immediate problem before them.
"Agreed," she said softly, her eyes never leaving Jeane's face. "We shall remain vigilant... and observe." The words felt like a pact between them—a silent promise to face whatever came next together, bound by more than just shared purpose now.
