The air crackled with residual magical energy as the portal stabilized into a shimmering gateway. Seraphine stood at its threshold, her dark elven eyes wide with awe and barely contained terror. The entity's words resonated through her very being—"Heart of Magic," "underlying code of magic." Her fingers tingled where they had brushed the crystalline structure, still humming with stolen power.
Jeane watched warily from a few paces back, her crimson gaze locked on the portal and its guardian. The succubus's wings shifted restlessly, dark leather catching what little light remained in the chamber. "You sure this isn't just some elaborate way to get us killed?" she growled under her breath. "Because from where I'm standing, that thing looks like trouble with a capital T."
Seraphine took a deep breath, steeling herself against the fear that threatened to overwhelm reason. "We've come this far for answers," she said, her voice barely wavering. "And now we have the chance to understand magic itself—its true nature and its limits." She extended her hand toward the portal, the Time-Splitting Sword already beginning to hum in response. "Think of what we could learn, Jeane. Think of the power we could harness if we understood how this works."
The entity's form shifted again, dark tendrils of energy coiling and uncoiling like living shadows. Its voice echoed through the chamber once more, each word seeming to resonate within Seraphine's very bones. "Cross the threshold, and you shall see beyond the veil of mundane perception. But be warned—the truth is often... uncomfortable."
Jeane's wings snapped taut, her expression hardening. "Uncomfortable how? Because I'm pretty sure 'uncomfortable' doesn't cover whatever the hells we're about to step into." She moved closer to Seraphine, her hand drifting toward the hilt of a hidden dagger. "If this goes south, and fast, you grab my arm and we haul ass back through that portal. Deal?"
Seraphine nodded, her throat suddenly dry. "Deal." She took another deep breath, then stepped forward into the shimmering gateway. The air around her crackled with static energy, and for a moment, she felt as if her very atoms were being rearranged.
The world beyond the portal shifted and blurred, reality itself seeming to bend and twist. Seraphine found herself standing in an ethereal forest of glowing crystalline trees that pulsed with arcane energy. The ground beneath her feet was transparent, showing swirling patterns of magic flowing through the earth like rivers of liquid light. She could feel the power of the place coursing through her veins, making her heart race and her breath come faster.
Jeane followed her through the portal, her demonic eyes wide with wonder despite her obvious wariness. The succubus woman looked around slowly, her wings half-spread for balance on the unstable terrain. "Well," she said finally, her voice barely audible over the hum of ambient magic. "This is... something else."
