Phase: escalating

The inner chamber's magic pulsed like a malevolent heartbeat as the adventurers pressed closer to the runic gate. The air grew thick with corruption, pressing down on them physically. Scuttling sounds echoed from above, below, and all around—the horrors of the tower drawing near. Jeane felt the structure feeding on their fear, growing stronger by the moment.
Merrin called out over the rising cacophony, "Everyone stay close! Merrin takes point, Varrika watches our rear—keep that mist spell up, Jeane!" The rogue's fingers flew across the gate's locking mechanism, sweat beading on her brow as she struggled to decipher its complex patterns. Seraphine leaned closer to examine the glyphs, her expression grave. "This isn't a barrier," she murmured. "It's a soul battery—designed to drain life force from anyone who touches it."
Halie stepped forward, pressing her palm against one of the larger runes and channeling divine energy through her holy symbol. A soft glow spread across the glyph before fading away—unchanged. She cursed softly. "It's resisting even divine power. Whatever this thing was built with, it's far darker than mere death magic." Her eyes darted around the group. "We need another way through—fast."
The sounds of claws scraping against stone grew louder, echoing from every direction now. Something massive was approaching, drawing strength from their terror. Jeane felt the tower feeding on them, growing more powerful with each passing heartbeat. Merrin shouted over the rising chaos, "Move out! Form up!"
They fell into formation—Merrin in the lead, Varrika guarding the rear, the others clustering together between them. The mist spell shimmered around them, their only defense against whatever horrors awaited beyond the gate. Seraphine's eyes remained fixed on the runes as they passed, searching for any sign of weakness or alternative solution.
The corridor beyond opened into a vast chamber dominated by a massive, writhing shadow at its center—the source of the scuttling sounds.",
