Phase: escalating

Merrin lunged forward with her dagger, the blade biting deep into the nearest tentacle. The creature recoiled, letting out an unholy shriek as its severed body crashed to the ground. "Move!" she shouted, already sprinting toward the sealed door ahead.*
Jeane followed close behind, her crimson eyes gleaming in the flickering divine light. She glanced back at Seraphine, who clutched her spellbook tightly, and then up at the ceiling where the unknown creatures still moved. "This place is alive," she hissed, more to herself than anyone else.*
Seraphine stumbled after them, her legs heavy with exhaustion and fear. The air around them felt wrong—thick and oppressive, like trying to breathe underwater. "I feel it too," she gasped, clutching her chest where the dark energy seemed to concentrate. "Something ancient sleeps here, and we're disturbing its slumber."*
The sound of claws scraping stone echoed up from below, growing louder with each passing moment. Merrin reached the door first and dropped into a crouch beside it, her lockpicks already in hand. "Varrika!" she called out, her voice tight with urgency. "We need to get through this door—now!"*
Up above, Varrika heard Merrin's call and felt a surge of desperate hope. She was running low on energy—35% remaining—and the entity below showed no signs of stopping its relentless assault. "Hurry!" she screamed, her voice echoing down the stairs.*
The tentacles had paused their advance after Halie's symbol activated, but now they began to reform, coalescing into new shapes with disturbing speed. Jeane watched them warily, her wings twitching with barely contained energy. "The glyphs are alive—pulsing with stolen life force," she whispered, stepping closer to the barrier. "Each beat drains us further."
Merrin's fingers flew over the lock mechanism, but the ancient tumblers refused to align. She gritted her teeth in frustration. "This is no ordinary lock!" she growled, sweat beading on her forehead. "It's resisting me—like it's alive!"
Seraphine stumbled closer, her eyes wide with fear and fascination. "Of course it is," she breathed, clutching her spellbook tighter. "Everything in this tower is animated by dark energy—even the architecture itself."*
The scraping sounds below grew louder, accompanied now by a low groaning as something massive shifted beneath them. The very stone seemed to vibrate with malevolent intent. "Merrin!" Varrika screamed from above. "What's taking so long? They're almost here!"*
Merrin redoubled her efforts, sweat streaming down her face as she worked the tumblers with desperate speed. But no matter how she manipulated them, the lock refused to yield. "It's no use!" she cried out in frustration. "This thing's beyond me—it needs magic!"
Jeane's eyes gleamed with sudden realization. "Wait," she said, stepping closer to examine the door's surface. Her fingers traced the intricate carvings, and a shudder ran through her. "I think I know what this is—a binding circle. The lock is just the trigger."
Seraphine gasped as understanding dawned. "By the goddess," she whispered, her voice trembling. "If we break the seal, we'll release whatever's trapped inside!"
The tentacles were reforming again, their mass growing larger and more grotesque with each passing moment. Jeane backed away, her wings half-spread in alarm. "We don't have a choice," she hissed. "The alternative is being consumed by those things—or worse, whatever's below us."
Merrin met her gaze, then nodded grimly. "Do it," she said, stepping back from the door. "But be ready to run."
Jeane raised her hands, arcane energy crackling between her fingertips. She began to chant in a language long forgotten, her voice echoing ominously off the stone walls. The glyphs on the door began to glow with an eerie light, pulsing in time with her words.*
The air grew colder still as the spell took hold. With a final, thunderous crack, the binding circle shattered. The doors swung inward, revealing a darkness beyond that seemed to drink in all light and sound.
