Phase: escalating

The air grew colder as they stepped into the darkness of the tunnel, the scratching below intensifying until it sounded like a thousand claws against stone, growing closer with each passing second. Merrin led the way, her keen eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of more hidden chambers or secret passages, the wiry halfling scout woman moving with practiced ease despite the mounting tension. Behind her, Jeane followed close, her crimson eyes blazing in the dim light as she drew power, ready to unleash her arcane might at a moment's notice.
"Back!" the tall winged succubus woman barked, already weaving a complex pattern with her fingers as she chanted in Infernal, the syllables coming smooth and fast despite her pounding heart. "Merrin, with me! Seraphine, fall back—now!" The air was thick with the stench of the tentacled horrors that surged forward from the hidden chamber, their movements fluid and terrifyingly fast.
Halie clutched her silver holy symbol tighter, feeling its energy pulse weakly against her palm—as if barely a heartbeat now compared to its usual steady rhythm. The scratching below intensified until it sounded like a thousand claws against stone, growing closer with each passing second. This place was wrong—everything felt off, corrupted somehow.
I feel it too—the wrongness pressing down on us like a physical weight, Halie’s voice echoed in Merrin’s mind, the weary human woman’s blue-grey eyes wide with apprehension as she spun around at Jeane’s warning about more creatures in side passages. Halie was right, this place is alive in the worst possible way.
No—we need more than just magic to survive this, Seraphine thought desperately, her sharp-eyed gaze darting around the tunnel as she backed away from the approaching horror. The scratching intensified, a thousand claws scraping against stone, echoing off the walls and seeming to come from everywhere at once. She took a sharp breath, her fingers twitching towards the spellbook at her belt before she stopped herself.
"Something is feeding on our life force," the elf scholar woman called out over the din, her voice steady despite the fear that gripped her heart. "We need to move—now!"
