The road to Gravehill lies cracked and littered with ash, its surface slick from a recent rain that has turned the dust into fine grit. A low, storm-dark sky hangs heavy above, clouds swirling in slow, ominous circles. Far off, the ruined church stands as a skeletal silhouette against the horizon, its stone walls crumbling and overgrown with thorny vines. A narrow path winds through a thicket of dead trees, their branches clawing at the sky like skeletal fingers. The rusted key glints faintly in the lantern’s glow, resting on a broken stone slab beside the road. Gravedigger Renn stands near the entrance to the church, his eyes darting nervously toward the darkened streets below. The air smells of damp earth and distant smoke.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane crouched by the stone slab, retrieving the rusted key with careful fingers, turning it in the lantern light. The metal was cold and felt heavy somehow, its edges worn smooth by long use. She traced the head of the key—its teeth were filed down deliberately into a shape she didn't recognize as standard lockwork. A sigil? An old ward mark? She held the key up, closing her eyes to focus her inner sight. She murmured an incantation in a language that felt wrong on her tongue. The key pulsed faintly in her hand—a low thrum of residual magic, long since spent but still lingering like an echo of power. This is no ordinary key, she said, her voice cool despite the chill that ran down her spine. It opens something important, and something dangerous. We should proceed with caution.

Silra

Silra · Rogue

Silra approached from behind Jeane, her boots soundless on the slick ash. She glanced at the key in the sorcerer’s fingers, then down the road toward where Gravedigger Renn stood fidgeting near the ruined church entrance. "You’re touching dead things." Her voice was dry. "That’s a magistrate’s house key—look at the loop, see how it’s worn? They always kept them tied to their belts so they could find them in the dark when drunk. This one’s been carried by someone who vomited regularly, probably from fear or cheap wine."

She plucked the key from Jeane’s hand with a quick gesture and held it up to the weak light. The teeth were filed down—file marks visible under the rust if you knew what to look for. "The magistrate kept it sharp at first," Silra said, turning the metal carefully. "Then he started filing them down over time. One tooth less each year. Superstitious bastards—they believe a key that’s used to open too many locks will eventually open doors no one wants opened." She dropped it back into Jeane’s palm without asking. "Probably why Gravedigger Renn looks like he’s about to piss himself down there."

Sister Hale

Sister Hale · Cleric

Sister Hale moved to the head of their small group, her unholy symbol held forward in a gesture that was as much command as prayer. "We enter Gravehill under watchful eyes," she said, her voice steady despite the weight of the city's long silence bearing down on them from the crumbling walls ahead. The rusted key in Jeane's hand felt suddenly heavy with more than just metal—a burden of history and purpose that settled cold against Sister Hale's skin as they began their walk toward the gate.
