The ash‑choked road curves along Gravehill’s ruined outskirts, littered with broken stone and drifting dust. A storm‑dark sky hangs low, the wind rattling the skeletal remains of the abandoned church beyond the bend. Lantern light flickers from a lone torch held by a weary traveler, casting long, wavering shadows on the cracked cobbles. The rusted key lies half‑buried in a shallow trench, its metal dulled by years of neglect. A faint, damp scent of earth and decay lingers in the air, mingling with the distant echo of distant bells. Gravedigger Renn stands near the road’s edge, clutching a shovel, his eyes flicking nervously toward the darkened church walls. The old city traps are silent, their mechanisms dormant beneath the crumbling stones.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane Cromwell stepped onto the ash‑choked road, her sorcerer's robes whispering with each gust of wind. The storm‑dark sky pressed down like a tombstone lid, and she felt the old city's bones creaking beneath them—the sense of something waking that shouldn't be disturbed. She turned to Silra and Sister Hale: "This place stinks of rot and secrets. Gravedigger Renn looks about ready to shit himself." Her voice was sharp, commanding, barely concealing her own flicker of unease. She gestured toward the church with a gloved hand. "The rusted key is our ticket in. But first—" Jeane pulled out her unholy symbol, its blackened metal catching what little light remained. "Let's see if anything foul lies waiting in ambush." She traced a quick arcane gesture—the air seemed to thicken, then ripple like disturbed water. Her eyes narrowed as she scanned the ruined streets and shadows. "Clear so far. But the old city traps are still here somewhere." Her gaze lingered on a patch of ground where the earth looked… wrong, subtly sunken. "Stay together," Jeane ordered. She moved toward the suspicious depression in the road, her boots crunching on ash and bone‑dust. "If something's lurking beneath us, I'd rather face it here than stumble into it inside."

Silra

Silra · Rogue

Silra crouched by the roadside, ash sifting through her fingers like funeral dust. The storm overhead felt heavy enough to crush the whole cursed city back into the earth where it belonged. "Listen," she said to Jeane and Sister Hale, voice dry as old parchment, "this reconstruction project smells fouler than a troll's armpit. Gravedigger Renn there looks like he swallowed a ghost halfway down his throat—probably why he's still breathing." She gestured toward the nervous man clutching his shovel. "Renn!" Silra called out. "Come here and tell us what you actually know about this church business before we all get ourselves buried for real."

She moved with casual purpose, checking the ground around them—looking for pressure points in the earth that might trigger old city traps, scanning the ruined architecture for watchers hidden in shadows cast by flickering torchlight. The rusted key lay half-buried nearby, and she made a mental note of its position. "If there's a sex cult involved," Silra muttered to no one in particular, "I'd rather find out before we're all being sacrificed on some unholy altar instead of rebuilding an actual church."
