In Sister Hale's own words
I am Sister Hale. The road through Gravehill is cracked like old bones, and the air tastes of ash and regret. I keep walking because someone must—because faith demands it even when my hands ache from holding too many graveside services for those who died before their time. When we found that pit trap, I saw Gravedigger Renn's fear first, sharp and ugly, but then I felt the unnatural darkness settle like a shroud. My mace is under my cloak, familiar weight against my hip. I am here to minister to the living and the dead alike—though sometimes the line between them blurs in places like this. I try not to be their servant or their judge too quickly; patience has its own rewards. But make no mistake: if a soul needs tending, whether it's bound by flesh or memory, I will tend to it.
