Narrator · Narrator

Silra’s fingers trace the jagged iron edges, and she feels a faint, cold seam beneath the dust. A shallow groove reveals a metal latch that, when pulled, would release a heavy stone slab from the ceiling of the pit. The hiss of steam grows louder as the latch is nudged, and a distant clang echoes through the ash‑laden air.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane watched Silra’s careful work with a cold assessment—as the elf traced the pit trap, she saw the shift in steam pressure, heard the distant clang. The city remembers pain. Renn's terrified eyes met hers from across the road; his fear was useful, pointing to threats before they manifested. The key from that dead magistrate might open more than just doors—perhaps it unlocked secrets buried with the city’s fall. Jeane moved toward Silra and knelt beside her, voice low so only the elf could hear: "Clever fingers." Her hand brushed Silra's as she took over, feeling for the latch mechanism. The metal was slick under her gloves, oily with old grease—as she found it and began to pull, the hiss of steam grew into a whistle, sharp and warning. Something heavy shifted above them. Let this be a message—the city guard are coming.

Silra

Silra · Rogue

The wind shifted, carrying with it that familiar stink—ash and rust—and something new: the smell of old metal and hot rock beneath the surface. Silra's fingers traced the jagged iron edges of the pit trap like a thief searching for a lock, and she found what she was looking for: a faint seam in the dust, colder than stone should be. A shallow groove revealed itself under her touch—a metal latch that would probably release a very heavy stone slab from above. She nudged it with the tip of her dagger. The hiss of escaping steam grew louder, and then came the sound she'd been waiting for: a dull clang echoing through the ruins, distant but unmistakable. Someone was moving in the old city. "Renn," Silra said, not turning to look at the gravedigger cowering behind them, "what else is buried here that you've conveniently forgotten to mention?" The elf's voice carried a dry wit as sharp as her blades, but underneath it was irritation—she'd been on the wrong end of too many 'unforeseen complications' lately.

Sister Hale

Sister Hale · Cleric

Sister Hale steps closer, her holy symbol clutched tight as she scans the pit’s edge with a cleric's stern gaze. "Silra, stand back—these traps are no trifle." She bends to examine where Silra found the seam, her fingers brushing dust aside. "Renn, don't faint now," she snaps, not unkindly but firm. "Stay alert." Her eyes narrow as she spots what looks like a trigger plate beneath the ash, half-concealed by debris—she nudges it with her bootheel, ready to leap back if it gives way. (Attempt: Identify trap components and potential triggers on the pit's edge.)
