Round 25

Phase: escalating

As the splintered board arrangement around the window shuddered violently, the dark shape stepped closer to the door with deliberate speed, its movements unnervingly swift. The air was heavy with anticipation as Gravedigger Renn's frantic words echoed through their ears: "Whatever is inside, it's not human... and it's coming for us!" Sister Hale took a step forward, her eyes fixed intently on the figure behind them, while Jeane readied another defensive spell, her exhaustion threatening to overwhelm her. The figure suddenly froze, its gaze locked onto Sister Hale with an unnerving intensity that sent shivers down her spine.
Jeane's fingers danced across the air once more, completing a complex arcane gesture as she struggled to comprehend the ancient corruption operating with deliberate intent. "If whoever orchestrated this wanted our capabilities brought through the window so badly," she thought, "then perhaps whatever trap is set requires that specific approach rather than a front door breach triggering a different response." The coordinated timing between impacts ceasing and the figure's retreat had left her wondering if they'd been outmaneuvered. As she sensed the weight of her spell forming, the air seemed to vibrate with energy, and she released it in a burst of light.
The board arrangement shattered inward, the figure retreating as splinters flew past, and Jeane crouched low instinctively, her teal eyes tracking every fragment's arc. Her mind cataloged the consequences immediately, her instincts reading across threat assessment patterns. "So much for tactical timing," she thought, her gaze darting to the rusted key from the dead magistrate in her pocket. The cold metal felt like a harbinger of foreboding, its significance unclear but promising.
