I grit my teeth and continue to pull back against the grip, using every last ounce of strength. Renn! My voice rings out across the alley, echoing off the stone walls as I strain to keep him from being dragged away. Tell us now! [Gravedigger Renn - frightened informant]
I try to push Sister Hale forward, my eyes darting back and forth between her and the approaching guard leader. Please, Sister! I whisper urgently, trying to get her attention without drawing more unwanted attention. We can't let them take you! The voice from the darkness seems to be growing louder, its words dripping with malevolent glee: 'You should have listened...'

I twist hard against the unseen thing pulling me back, my boots scrabbling on loose brick as I dig in with everything left. Whatever's got its claws in me is cold as a tomb stone and strong enough to drag a horse—but I'm not giving up Gravedigger Renn that easily.
