As Jeane and Silra stepped into the chamber proper, Hale's gaze swept over them with an unnerving intensity, her eyes seeming to bore into their very souls. The air thickened further, heavy with the scent of damp earth, metal, and something faintly sweet that made Silra's nostrils flare in distaste. The lantern light cast eerie shadows on the walls, where symbols pulsed with residual magic that seemed to be watching them, waiting for its cue. Hale's smile widened, revealing pointed teeth, as she took a step closer to them, her voice taking on a musical quality, like the soft chime of a bell, yet it sent shivers down Jeane's spine.
Silra's gut told her this was wrong from the moment they entered the tunnel, the air tasting like ancient rot mixed with something living that shouldn't be. The walls felt too smooth, too deliberate in their construction, as if they were being watched by unseen eyes. She tightened her grip on the rusted key, its warm pulse drawing lines across its surface that matched the boundary symbols above - a clear indication they were walking into someone's security perimeter right now. The tunnel branched after fifty feet, with two paths leading off in opposite directions: one to the left, the other straight ahead. Silra hesitated, weighing her options as she glanced at Jeane and Hale, their faces illuminated by the flickering light of the lanterns.
