The welder hissed as Silra set it aside, her movements precise despite the tension crackling through the air like static electricity. She faced Jeane directly, a slender figure in dark clothing that seemed almost defiant against the opulence of the penthouse suite. Her teal eyes were bright and focused—technomancer's eyes—but there was something harder beneath the surface, a core of iron that had been tempered by years of navigating worlds where one wrong step meant death or worse.
"I understand your frustration," Silra began, her voice low and measured, "but throwing tantrums won't solve this. Halie is trying to buy us time—" She paused, choosing her words carefully. "—to find a solution that doesn't involve you tearing the building apart with your… appetites." Her gaze never wavered from Jeane's, unwavering despite the visible strain in the Succubus's posture.
Jeane's expression was a storm of barely contained lust and barely suppressed rage, her wings twitching restlessly behind her. The air around her seemed to shimmer with heat, and Silra could feel the pressure building, like water against a dam that was beginning to leak. She knew they were playing a dangerous game—Jeane's control had always been tenuous at best, and the building's demands were only growing stronger.
But there was no other choice. Not yet, anyway. Silra took a deep breath, forcing her own body to relax despite the adrenaline screaming through her veins. "I need forty minutes to complete these repairs," she said firmly. "If you can manage to keep it together for that long without trying to seduce everyone in the room—or worse—then we might actually solve this problem without having to call a plumber."
The words hung in the air between them, a challenge and an olive branch all at once. Silra knew she was walking a razor's edge—Jeane could snap at any moment, her succubus nature overwhelming what little human consciousness remained. But they needed her cooperation, damn it. Needed her to understand that this wasn't just about satisfying base urges anymore.
"This isn't personal," Silra continued, her voice softening slightly but never losing its edge. "It's survival. All of ours. Including yours." She gestured toward the half-finished repairs with one hand—the metal plates gleaming dully in the dim light, a monument to human ingenuity and desperation. "Help me fix this thing properly, and maybe we can all go back to our lives. Separately."
Jeane's eyes narrowed fractionally, and for a moment Silra thought she'd pushed too far. But then, almost imperceptibly, the tension in her shoulders eased just a fraction. Not submission—never that—but perhaps… understanding? Or at least grudging acceptance of necessity?
"Fine," Jeane ground out, each word like it was being torn from her throat. "But if I start to lose control, you'd better hope Halie's little mind games work faster than you think." Her wings unfurled fully now, a display of power and frustration that sent a shiver down Silra's spine despite herself.
Silra nodded once, curtly. "Agreed." She turned back to the workbench, picking up her tools with renewed determination. The clock was ticking, and she refused to let this building win—not like this, not on these terms.
In the background, Halie continued her quiet conversation with Abby, trying to keep the atmosphere from spiraling completely out of control. It wasn't perfect—the air still smelled of sex and desperation—but at least they were still talking, still thinking. Still alive.
And for now, that was enough.
