Phase: resolution · forced · organic escalating
Silra's teal eyes track every micro-adjustment in Jeane's stance, the rogue elf's mind already racing through contingency plans. She circles the sorceress slowly, each step measured and deliberate, maintaining distance while staying within arm's reach.
"You're not thinking clearly," Silra says, her voice carrying an unusual edge of concern despite its typical evenness. "Breaching that tunnel alone means you'll be trapped halfway between realms with nothing but whatever magic you can muster and however many of them are waiting on the other side." Her fingers brush Jeane's shoulder blade—a touch meant for reassurance, though it carries an undercurrent of warning.
Jeane turns to face her fully, the complex magical fields around Hera shimmering with the movement. "I'm thinking clearly," she insists, though her voice wavers slightly. "The barrier is unstable and will collapse eventually. We need to know what's on the other side before that happens." Her eyes flick toward Hera, then back to Silra. "Besides, I won't be alone. You'll come with me."
Silra's expression doesn't change, but something in her posture shifts—an almost imperceptible tensing of her jaw. "That wasn't the deal," she says coolly. "I agreed to help maintain the barrier and analyze its structure, not to walk into a potentially hostile realm as your bodyguard." She steps closer, lowering her voice. "And you're in no condition to be making tactical decisions right now. Your magic is barely under control—one wrong spell and we lose everything."
Jeane's cheeks flush with anger—or perhaps embarrassment—and she opens her mouth to respond. But before she can speak, Hera suddenly lurches forward against her restraints, face contorted with silent rage.
"Enough!" Silra snaps, striding over to Hera in two quick steps. She examines the shimmering fields holding the human woman in place, fingers tracing patterns in the air as she mutters under her breath. The magic flickers under her scrutiny but holds firm.
"You're not helping by thrashing around," Silra tells Hera sharply. "These fields are already unstable enough without you adding to them." Her eyes narrow as she notices something—a telltale sign of strain in the magical structure. "Jeane, what exactly did you do to these bindings? They're... wrong somehow."
Jeane hesitates, then admits, "I improvised. Combined several different spells to ensure maximum security and silence." She moves closer, pride evident in her voice despite Silra's obvious concern. "They're perfect—no way she can break free or make a sound."
Silra doesn't respond immediately, her fingers continuing to dance through the air around Hera's trapped form. Finally, she straightens up, expression grim. "Perfect might be overstating it," she says slowly. "The layers are impressive, but they're also... messy. Overlapping in ways that could cause feedback loops if stressed too much."
Jeane's face falls slightly. "Feedback loops? What does that mean?"
"It means," Silra explains, "that if Hera manages to break one part of the binding—or if external magic hits it—the whole thing could cascade and potentially backfire on you." She glances at Abby, still kneeling obediently nearby. "Or anyone else caught in the blast radius."
Jeane's eyes widen with horror, then narrow as she glares at Hera. "This is your fault," she hisses. "If you hadn't been so reckless—"
"Enough!" Silra cuts her off sharply. "We don't have time for recriminations right now." She turns to face Jeane fully, expression serious. "I can stabilize the fields temporarily, but it's a patch, not a fix. And it won't last long-term. We need to find a better solution—one that doesn't involve you holding hostages with jury-rigged magic."
Jeane opens her mouth to argue, but Silra holds up a hand for silence. "No," she says firmly. "I'm not asking here—I'm telling you. You're too emotionally invested and it's clouding your judgment." Her eyes flick toward Hera again, then back to Jeane. "Let me handle the binding magic. You focus on whatever's going on with Abby—and for fuck's sake, tell me what happened in that bedroom before you try taking us all into a potentially lethal realm shift."
Jeane's jaw works silently for a moment before she nods stiffly. "Fine," she mutters. "But I'm not letting her go." She stalks over to where Abby kneels, crouching down to eye-level with the compliant woman.
Silra watches them both for a long moment before turning her attention back to Hera's magical bindings. Her fingers begin moving through complex patterns, the air around them shimmering with barely-visible energy as she works to stabilize Jeane's jury-rigged spellwork.
Hera remains trapped and silent, eyes burning with fury as she watches the proceedings. Her muscles strain against the invisible bonds, but Silra's work seems to be having an effect—some of the instability fades from the shimmering fields containing her.
In the corner of the room, the sybian sits quietly, its usual purpose forgotten in the midst of looming magical threats and shifting alliances between the women.
