Round 4 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

At Penthouse suite in a New York high rise, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. Someone has to answer that change now.
Jeane stopped at the bedroom doorframe, her wings half-extended for balance and defense. The stone underfoot pulsed with fresh magic—something responding to their presence, something new or awakened by their entry. She swept her gaze across the parquet floor, searching for trigger patterns, sigils hidden in geometry. "This isn't my work," she said flatly to Silra's question. "Too crude. Too... reactive." The ward felt like an alarm system, not a welcoming spell. It didn't caress the skin with temptation—it prickled with warning. She took two slow steps across the room, feeling for pressure points in the floorboards. Each footfall was deliberate, testing weight distribution and listening to creaks that weren't structural. "Stay where you are," she instructed the others without turning. "Especially near the door."
The magic wasn't centered on the chest of toys—it radiated outward from somewhere deeper in the suite. Jeane's eyes narrowed as she noticed the parquet pattern shifting subtly under her gaze, lines rearranging themselves like living code. "A test, perhaps," she mused, more to herself than the group. "Or a trap." Her hand went to the dagger at her hip—a tool for precision, not brute force. "Either way, we need to map this ward before proceeding."
She glanced back at Halie gathering supplies from the chest—holy symbols clinking together—and felt a moment's relief that the Cleric was occupied and anchored near Hera. "Silra," Jeane called, her voice barely above a whisper but carrying authority. "I need you to mark every point where the floor feels... off. Uneven pressure, sound dampening, temperature shifts." She gestured to an empty corner of the room. "Start there and work methodically."
The succubus moved toward what she hoped was the source of the magical pulse—a wardstone hidden beneath furniture or rugs—her mind already cataloging possibilities: defensive magic triggered by uninvited guests, a spell designed to punish trespassers, or something more complex entirely.
Hera feels her heart race as she senses the fresh pulse emanating from the stone ward. She moves closer to Halie, offering a reassuring touch on her shoulder. "Stay close," Hera whispers, her voice steady despite the tension in the air. "We need to stick together."
She glances around the room, her eyes landing on Jeane as the succubus begins to map out the ward. Hera feels a flicker of unease at the thought of being left alone, but she trusts Halie's judgment. "Be careful," she calls out to Jeane, her tone a mix of warning and concern. "We don't know what we're dealing with here."
Hera's mind races as she tries to make sense of the situation. The penthouse suite feels different now, charged with an unknown energy that makes her skin prickle. She takes a deep breath, trying to calm the nerves that are threatening to overtake her. She knows they need to find out what's happening here, but the thought of facing whatever lies ahead fills her with dread. "Halie," she says softly, her voice barely audible above the hum of the ward. "What do we do now?"
I feel it too—the ward is alive and responding now, something ancient and hungry beneath us. We mustn't separate. Stay close to the door where we're safest. Jeane, please be careful probing that magic. And Hera—you don't need to cling so tightly. I understand you're frightened, but your proximity makes me anxious too. Let's all stay together and think this through calmly. I'm going to check on Abby quickly; she seems terrified alone by the window. Then we'll examine the ward as a group, with caution.
I watch Jeane move towards the bedroom door with a mixture of fascination and dread. Her confidence is unnerving, but also oddly reassuring. I know she has experience with these things, even if I don't fully understand what she's doing. The way the floorboards creak beneath her feet makes me jump, my heart hammering in my chest.
I turn to Halie, who is still standing near the door, her eyes fixed on Jeane. She looks tense, but also determined. I want to go to her, to ask what's happening, but something holds me back. Maybe it's just my own cowardice, or maybe I know that right now, asking questions won't get me any answers.
I notice Silra moving around the room, her movements silent and deliberate. She seems to be searching for something specific, though I can't imagine what. Her presence is a comfort, a reminder that we're not alone in this strange place. Hera catches my eye, offering a small, encouraging smile. It feels like an anchor in a storm.
As Jeane reaches the doorframe, there's another pulse through the floor, stronger this time. A soft glow emanates from beneath the boards, tracing intricate patterns that seem to shift and change before our eyes. I gasp, my hand flying to my mouth. The air crackles with an unfamiliar energy, making the fine hairs on my arms stand on end.
The magic feels ancient, powerful, and utterly alien. It's nothing like anything I've ever encountered before. And yet, deep within me, something stirs. A faint echo of that power, a distant memory of a connection I can't quite place. It’s terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
