The wardstone pulsed again, a sickly green glow bleeding through the doorframe despite Hera's shoulder pressed against it. The wood creaked ominously under strain, and water from the ruined bathroom beyond sloshed across the floorboards with every tremor. Jeane grit her teeth harder, sweat beading on her temples as she fed more power into the barrier spell—her dildo was starting to overheat in the wall socket, and the cheap plastic casing was melting slightly around the edges where it connected to her improvised harness.

"Thirty seconds," she gasped out, not really believing herself. "Twenty? Silra, stop fucking around back there and find us an exit before this entire corridor turns into a death trap." Her wings flexed involuntarily behind her, demonic nature responding to the wardstone's call like a predator scenting blood.

Silra had her hands flat against the wall again, fingers splayed wide as she searched for any structural weakness, hidden compartment, goddamn miracle that would get them out of this situation. The wardstone pulse came again—she could feel it vibrating through the plaster and studs beneath her palms like the building itself was alive with corruption.

"This whole section is compromised," she snarled back, frustration making her voice sharp. "I'm not finding shit but more structural failure. You want an exit? We need to go through that door, past whatever the fuck created this wardstone in the first place." She gestured at Hera's shoulder braced against the frame. "Unless you've got a better idea? Because your little barrier spell isn't going to hold forever."

The wardstone pulsed again—louder this time, greener, more insistent. The wood around Hera's shoulder cracked visibly, splinters flying as the frame warped outward slightly. She screamed and pressed harder against it, panic making her movements jerky and uncoordinated.

"FUCK!" Jeane shouted, yanking the melting dildo out of the socket and shoving it back into her harness with shaking hands. "Fine! We go through! Everyone get ready to move—Halie, you take point with that mirror, Silra behind her, I'll cover our six." She drew a pair of wicked curved daggers from her boot sheathes, the steel gleaming faintly in the emergency lighting. "Stay close and stay quiet. The wardstone creator is probably still around somewhere, and I'd rather not meet them unprepared."

The doorframe cracked again—louder this time—as the wardstone pulsed once more. Hera whimpered in terror but held her position somehow. Jeane took a deep breath, wings spreading wide for balance as she prepared to lead them into whatever nightmare waited beyond that threshold.

"On three," she hissed. "One—"

The building groaned like a dying animal around them, and the floorboards beneath their feet shifted ominously. Water sloshed across the floor from the ruined bathroom, carrying with it the scent of mildew and something else—something ancient and wrong that made Silra's skin crawl despite her elven resistance to corruption.

"—two," Jeane continued, ignoring the warning signs. Her crimson eyes glowed faintly in the dim light as she drew on reserves of power, demonic nature flaring up despite her best efforts at control. The barrier spell had kept the worst of the wardstone's influence contained, but now they were about to walk straight into its source.

"—three!" She surged forward, daggers held ready, wings half-spread for balance as she pushed past Hera and into the darkness beyond the door. The others followed in a tight formation—Halie with her makeshift weapon raised, Silra scanning every angle for threats, and Hera bringing up the rear with wide terrified eyes.

The corridor beyond was even darker than the one they'd just escaped, air thick with ancient corruption that made their nostrils burn and tasted like ash on their tongues. The wardstone pulsed again—louder now, greener, more insistent—and Jeane realized with a sinking feeling that whatever lay ahead was far worse than what they'd left behind.

"Stay close," she breathed, leading them deeper into the darkness. "And for fuck's sake, try not to die."
