Silra moved through the darkness with practiced ease, her elven eyes adjusting quickly to the oppressive gloom of the corridor. Each pulse from the wardstone felt like a physical blow, sending shivers down her spine and making her teeth ache. She knew they were running out of time—every groan from the building's structure sounded like death rattles.

"Fuck," she hissed under her breath, pressing her back against the wall opposite the barricaded door. "This isn't working." Her fingers found the hidden compartment in her jacket, pulling out a small but powerful mag-light. The beam cut through the darkness ahead, revealing more of the same—cracked walls oozing something that definitely wasn't water, and a floor that seemed to tilt slightly with each wardstone pulse.

Halie's voice came from behind her, strained and barely controlled. "Silra! Can you hear me? The barricade won't hold much longer—not with my hands like this." She held up her burned palms, the skin raw and blistered, clearly unable to maintain a proper grip on anything heavy for long.

Silra aimed her light back toward Halie's position, illuminating the makeshift door brace—a large mirror propped precariously against the frame. The cleric was using her body weight to help keep it in place, but her face was etched with desperation.

"Yeah, I hear you," Silra called back, her voice tight. "But there's nothing but more of this shit up here. No hidden exits, no support beams we can reinforce." She played the light across the ceiling, revealing cracked plaster and what looked like thick insulation material pushing out from between the joists with each wardstone pulse.

"Great," Halie muttered, shifting her weight as another pulse hit. The mirror slipped a few centimeters before she managed to brace it again. "So we're trapped between certain death by collapse and certain corruption by whatever's behind that door? That's our options?"

Silra didn't answer immediately, her mind racing through possibilities. She knew they couldn't stay here—the building was coming down around them, and Jeane's channeling was becoming increasingly unstable. But moving forward meant confronting the wardstone directly, and she wasn't sure any of them were ready for that.

"Maybe we can—" Her words cut off as another pulse hit, stronger than before. The entire corridor seemed to groan in unison, and something large shifted above them with an ominous creaking sound.

Halie yelped as the mirror slipped again, this time sliding several inches before she managed to catch it with her shoulder. "Silra! Do something!"

The rogue was already moving, diving forward as a section of ceiling directly above Halie gave way. Plaster and insulation rained down, but what caught Silra's attention was the exposed space above—the gap between floor joists was wide enough for someone to crawl through.

"Up!" she shouted, grabbing Halie's good arm and yanking her away from the door. "We can get above the wardstone—find a way out through the ceiling!"

Halie stumbled, caught off balance by Silra's pull. She nearly fell on Hera but managed to twist at the last second, ending up sprawled on the floor beside the terrified civilian. The mirror clattered away, sliding across the slick surface and coming to rest against the far wall.

"You're insane," Halie panted, scrambling back to her feet. "We can't—"

"Watch out!" Silra's warning came just as a section of wall near the door began to crumble inward, sending more debris cascading into their space. The wardstone pulse that accompanied it was the strongest yet, and both women felt it like a physical blow.

"We don't have a choice," Silra growled, already moving toward the nearest exposed joist space. "Help me move this panel—together on three. One... two..."

Halie knew she should argue, should find another way. But as the building groaned again and more plaster dust rained down, she found herself nodding. "Three!"

Together, they threw their weight against the loose ceiling panel. It gave way with a screech of protesting wood, revealing a dark gap above them just as another section of wall collapsed completely, taking part of the door frame with it.

The wardstone's power surged through the newly opened space, visible now as a sickly green glow that pulsed with malevolent rhythm. Halie felt her skin crawl, the corruption in Hera's blood calling out to something ancient and hungry beneath them.

"Go!" Silra shouted, already climbing into the darkness above. "Now!"

Halie hesitated for only a second—looking at Hera's terrified face, then back at the gaping hole where the door used to be, now spilling green light into their space. She grabbed the civilian's arm, ignoring the jolt of corruption that shot through her at the contact.

"We have to move," she said firmly, pulling Hera toward the opening in the ceiling. "Stay close and don't touch anything."

The building chose that moment to groan again, louder this time—a sound that spoke of structural failure imminent. A section of floor near the collapsed door simply gave way, dropping through to the level below with a cascade of debris and dust.

That was all the motivation Halie needed. She half-dragged, half-pulled Hera up into the darkness above, her burned hands screaming in protest but adrenaline keeping her moving.

As soon as they were both clear, another wardstone pulse hit—stronger than any before it—and something massive shifted below them. The sound of collapsing floors echoed through the building like thunder, and a gust of dust-laden air rushed up through the gap they'd just climbed out of.

Silra was already moving ahead in the darkness above, her mag-light cutting a path through the narrow space between floor joists and ceiling tiles. She paused, looking back to make sure Halie and Hera were following.

"Stay low," she called back, voice barely audible over the continued rumble of collapsing structure below. "And try not to put too much weight on any one spot—we're above the wardstone now, and I don't want to give it more access points."

Halie nodded, even though Silra couldn't see her in the darkness. She kept Hera close, using her body to shield the civilian from the worst of the dust and debris that continued to rain down from the collapsing floors below.

"Where are we going?" she asked softly, not expecting an answer but needing to say something to break the oppressive silence between pulses.

"Up," Silra replied simply, already moving forward again. "If we can get to the roof, we might be able to—"

Her words were cut off by a sudden, violent shift in the structure beneath them. A massive section of floor gave way completely, and the sound of concrete and rebar being torn apart filled the air.

"Move!" Silra shouted, breaking into a run through the narrow space above. "Now!"

Halie didn't need to be told twice. She half-pushed, half-dragged Hera forward, her burned hands screaming in protest but adrenaline keeping her moving. The floor beneath them felt like it was breathing now—expanding and contracting with each wardstone pulse, the wood creaking ominously.

They stumbled through the darkness, following Silra's light ahead. The space above the wardstone was a nightmare of exposed pipes, insulation, and dust that seemed to cling to every surface. Each step felt like it might be their last as the building continued its slow-motion collapse around them.

And then, suddenly, they were through. The ceiling opened up into what looked like a maintenance space—narrower than before but higher, with access hatches visible above.

Silra was already at the nearest one, pulling frantically at a rusted handle. "Help me!" she called back, muscles straining as she tried to force the door open.

Halie let go of Hera long enough to grab the edge of the hatch and pull alongside Silra. Together, they managed to wrench it open, revealing a narrow shaft leading up into darkness.

"Up there," Silra panted, already climbing. "Come on—we need to get out of this building before it collapses completely."

Halie hesitated for only a second—looking back the way they'd come, where green light still pulsed ominously through the gap in the floor. Then she grabbed Hera's arm again and started climbing after Silra.

The shaft was narrow and dusty, forcing them to climb single-file. It seemed to go on forever—upward through concrete and insulation and God knew what else—but finally, they saw a glimmer of light above.

Silra reached it first, pushing aside a heavy grate with all her strength until it gave way. Fresh air rushed in, carrying the sound of rain and distant sirens.

"Almost there," she gasped, already climbing out into what looked like a service corridor on the roof level. "Hurry!"

Halie followed, dragging Hera up behind her. As soon as they were clear of the shaft, she collapsed against the wall, panting heavily. The adrenaline was starting to fade, replaced by exhaustion and the dull throb of her burned hands.

Silra was already moving again, checking doors and finding one that led outside. She threw it open, revealing the storm-lashed roof of the penthouse building—and beyond it, the lights of New York City stretching out in all directions.

"We made it," she said softly, more to herself than anyone else. Then louder: "Come on—let's get off this fucking death trap before it decides to finish collapsing."

Halie nodded, pulling Hera to her feet once more. The rain felt like ice against their skin as they stumbled out onto the roof, but for the first time in what felt like hours, Halie allowed herself to hope they might survive this night after all.

In the distance, she could hear sirens growing louder—the sound of emergency services responding to whatever had caused the building to start collapsing in the first place. She wondered if anyone else had made it out, or if they were the only survivors.

The thought sent a chill through her that had nothing to do with the rain. They'd escaped the immediate danger of the collapsing building and the wardstone's corruption... but what awaited them now, out here in the real world with no magic toys or makeshift barricades between them and whatever had caused this nightmare?

She looked at Silra, who was already scanning their surroundings for an escape route, and then back at Hera—still trembling and silent beside her. Whatever came next, they'd face it together.

But as another wardstone pulse echoed up through the building below, Halie couldn't shake the feeling that this was far from over.
