The building screamed around them, a living thing in its death throes. The wardstone pulsed again, harder this time, its rhythm accelerating like a heartbeat racing toward death. Two minutes until the floor gave way completely—Jeane knew it with the same certainty she knew her own spellbook. The building groaned around them, a living thing in its death throes, and fresh cracks spiderwebbed across the ceiling. "Silra!" She snapped her fingers sharply over the barrier spell keeping the worst of the energy contained. "Move! Now! We don't have time for hesitation." Her voice cut through Hera's whimpering and Halie's strained breathing. Authority demanded obedience, especially when panic threatened to fracture their already precarious situation.

Halie pushed harder against the door with her injured hands, feeling the wardstone energy seep through every crack and seam like liquid corruption. The mirror she'd braced it with shifted dangerously, and she had to drop one hand to stabilize it again while keeping pressure on the barrier with her shoulder and remaining arm. "I'm trying," she gasped, the effort making her dizzy. "The floor's slick—there's oil everywhere from those... things." Her eyes darted nervously toward Hera, still huddled against the opposite wall and radiating fear like heat.

Jeane felt the spellwork straining against the increasing pressure—not magic designed for containment, not really. She'd improvised this barrier on the fly, and it was already leaking worse than a sieve at the edges. The wardstone energy tasted wrong, thick and sweet and cloying, promising corruption with every pulse. She needed to maintain this spell for just two more minutes—two minutes until the entire floor collapsed into whatever hell awaited below. Two minutes while keeping everyone calm enough to move when the time came.

The building lurched again, harder this time, and a fresh crack split across the ceiling overhead. Dust showered down around them like confetti at a funeral. Halie choked back a cry as the mirror shifted violently in her grip, nearly pinning her fingers before she yanked them back with a yelp of pain. "Fuck!" The word slipped out before she could stop it—uncleric-like, certainly, but honest in its desperation.

Jeane's head snapped up at the sound, eyes narrowing as she assessed the situation through the haze of concentration required to maintain her spellwork. "Halie! Status!" Her voice was sharp with command despite the strain evident in her features—the demonic nature showing through human control for just a second before she wrestled it back into submission.

"I'm fine," Halie lied through gritted teeth, adjusting her grip on the mirror. "Just... losing leverage here. The floor's too slick." She glanced down at her feet, where puddles of water from the broken shower mixed with spilled lubricant to create a truly treacherous surface. One wrong step and she'd be sliding right into the wardstone energy seeping through the door frame.

Jeane felt a fresh wave of panic threaten to break her concentration—she couldn't maintain this spell while also physically moving Hera through a slippery death trap toward the dark corridor beyond. The math was simple: either they all died here in two minutes when the floor collapsed, or someone had to make a choice about who survived and how. And that choice was hers to make, whether she wanted it or not.

The wardstone pulsed again, harder still, and this time Jeane felt something give way in her spellwork—the barrier shimmered visibly for a second before she slammed her will back into it, teeth gritted so hard she tasted blood. "Move!" She snapped at Halie, voice cracking with urgency. "Now! Before this whole fucking building comes down around our ears!"

Halie didn't need to be told twice—she pushed away from the door with all her strength, stumbling backward and nearly falling as her feet slipped out from under her on the slick floor. She caught herself against the wall just in time, heart pounding, as the mirror she'd been bracing slid sideways with an ominous groan of stressed wood.

The movement broke Jeane's concentration for a fatal second—her spellwork wavered visibly, and a fresh wave of wardstone energy poured through the cracks around the door frame like liquid shadow. She had maybe thirty seconds before this entire corridor became saturated with corruption, and once that happened, maintaining any kind of barrier would be impossible.

"Hera!" Jeane shouted, voice barely human in its urgency as she fought to re-establish control over her spellwork. "Get away from the walls! Move toward the center of the hallway—now!"

The building chose that moment to lurch again, more violently this time—a section of ceiling collapsed near the far end with a deafening crash of breaking concrete and twisted metal. Dust billowed out in a choking cloud, visibility dropping to near zero within seconds.

Halie coughed and sputtered, pressing herself flat against the wall as debris rained down around her. She could feel the wardstone energy growing stronger already, seeping through the very air itself now that Jeane's barrier was compromised. Her burned hands throbbed with renewed intensity—she needed to get Hera out of here, needed to protect her from this corruption no matter what it cost.

But moving meant crossing a floor slick with water and lubricant, meant navigating zero visibility with wardstone energy already saturating the air. One wrong step and they'd both be pulled into whatever waited beyond that compromised door—into the dark corridor Hera had been so desperate to reach earlier, now revealed as potentially more dangerous than the collapsing building itself.

Jeane fought to maintain her spellwork, feeling the magic strain against the increasing pressure like a rope stretched too thin. She could buy them maybe another minute at this rate—maybe—and then the energy would overwhelm her completely. The taste of it was already making her dizzy, sweet and cloying and wrong in a way that made her demonic nature recoil despite centuries of experience with corrupting energies.

She needed to make a choice. Save herself and let the others face whatever awaited beyond that door—or take Hera and Halie through with her, into the unknown darkness while maintaining this spell against impossible odds. The math was simple: either they all died here in a collapsing building, or she gambled on survival through sheer magical will and desperate hope.

The wardstone pulsed again, harder still, and Jeane felt something give way deep within her spellwork—the structure of it beginning to unravel from the inside out like threadbare cloth. She had maybe ten seconds left before this entire corridor became saturated with corruption beyond her ability to contain.

"Halie!" she shouted, voice barely human in its urgency as she fought to maintain control. "Get Hera—move toward me! Now!"

The cleric didn't hesitate—she launched herself off the wall and into motion, sliding across the slick floor toward where Jeane stood near the center of the hallway. Her feet slipped out from under her halfway across, sending her careening forward in a uncontrolled slide that ended with her crashing into Hera's huddled form.

The impact knocked the wind out of both women—Halie gasped in pain as her burned hands took the brunt of the fall, while Hera let out a startled yelp that quickly turned to something softer and more frightened as Halie's body pressed against hers. For one brief moment they lay tangled together on the floor, close enough that Halie could feel Hera's rapid heartbeat through her own chest.

Jeane felt time slowing down around them—the wardstone pulsed again, harder still, and she watched in horror as her spellwork finally gave way completely. The barrier shimmered and evaporated like mist in sunlight, evaporated into nothingness before their eyes.

And then the real nightmare began—wardstone energy poured through that empty space like liquid shadow, flooding the corridor with darkness visible and magical corruption palpable. It hit them all at once—a wave of wrongness that made every nerve ending scream in protest.

Halie cried out as the energy washed over her already-injured hands, burned skin sizzling like bacon in a pan as the corruption sank into her flesh. Her vision blurred with pain and something else—something darker, more insidious—that made her body respond in ways she didn't want to examine too closely.

Jeane felt it too—the demonic nature within her recoiling even as part of her craved the power offered by this ancient magic. She fought against both impulses simultaneously, pouring every ounce of will into creating a new barrier around herself and the others before the corruption could take root permanently.

It wasn't enough. The energy was too strong, too pervasive—it slipped through every crack in her hastily constructed defenses like smoke through gauze. Within seconds she felt it seeping into her own flesh, cold and wrong and impossibly tempting all at once.

Hera screamed as the wardstone energy hit her full force—the source of her corruption responding to its creator with terrifying synchronicity. Her body arched off the floor in a convulsion that had nothing to do with pain and everything to do with something else taking control.

Jeane watched in horror as Hera's eyes rolled back in her head, mouth opening wide in a silent scream as her entire body began to glow with an inner light that pulsed in time with the wardstone. The corruption was consuming her from the inside out—transforming her into something else entirely right before their eyes.

No. No fucking way was this happening on her watch. With a snarl of pure fury, Jeane threw every last bit of magical power she possessed into creating a new barrier—not around them all, but specifically around Hera's convulsing form. The spell snapped into place with visible force, containing the worst of the energy just as Hera's transformation reached its peak.

The building chose that moment to lurch again—harder this time than ever before. A section of floor near the collapsed end gave way completely with a sound like thunder, revealing a gaping hole through which Jeane could see the flickering lights of lower floors several stories below.

They were out of time. The entire floor was collapsing now, and their corridor was going with it in seconds. Jeane had maybe three options left: maintain this containment spell around Hera while trying to physically carry her through a dark unknown corridor filled with who-knew-what dangers; abandon Hera to whatever fate awaited beyond that barrier and focus on saving herself and Halie instead; or let the entire building collapse around them all and hope for the best in whatever hell awaited below.

The choice was hers. Three seconds left before the floor gave way completely. Two. One.

Jeane grabbed Hera's inert body with both hands—still convulsing but contained within her magical barrier—and shouted to Halie: "MOVE! NOW!"
