Round 141 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Jeane's eyes burn with exhaustion as she orders, "Hera, stay right there. Halie, put the barrier back fully—brace that door with everything you have." Her voice is a low growl, the strain of maintaining her spell reserves palpable. The wardstone's pulse ripples through the stone like an eager beast sensing prey. Halie shifts at the doorframe, her hands still burning where she touched it earlier. She grits her teeth, determination etched on her face. Hera, frozen in place, seems oblivious to the danger, her grip on the mirror tight. Silra's search for an escape route is cut short as a loud creak echoes through the corridor. The floor beneath her feet gives way, sending her tumbling towards the water-stained wall. She scrambles to regain her footing, her eyes wide with fear. The mirror behind Hera shudders, the sound of splintering wood growing louder. The water from the broken shower stall surges forward, threatening to engulf Halie and Hera. The barrier between the group and the dark corridor is now a mere few feet away, its instability a ticking time bomb.
The wardstone pulses again—I can feel it through my teeth, through the floor, like rot spreading—and I know we have minutes before this building comes down around our ears. The corridor beyond Halie's makeshift barricade is dark and wrong, pulsing with energy that wants to bleed into us. I'm barely holding the barrier spell now, exhaustion pulling at my reserves like teeth on flesh. Every pulse is a challenge I can't afford to lose—I need Halie's faith for this, her certainty unbroken or we're all done anyway. "Stay back from the dark," I snap, voice sharper than I mean it to be but too tired for gentleness right now. "Halie, put the barrier back fully—brace that door with everything you have." She shifts weight, grips the frame, and I can see her hands still burning where she touched it earlier. I turn to Silra who's examining the ceiling joists like they hold answers. "You find us an escape route now or we all die here. Two minutes—maybe less if that thing pulses again." My wings twitch with strain under my robes, muscles screaming for rest I can't give them yet. The building creaks around us, a sound like old bones shifting, and something deep in the structure groans with stress. Hera's grip tightens on the mirror bracing the door—she's terrified but holding position because she has to, because there's nowhere else to go. I maintain the barrier spell against the wardstone energy, feeling it push back like cold fingers trying to get under my skin. Each pulse makes the floor underfoot feel less solid, more like walking on thin ice over deep water. The ceiling is giving way—I can feel it in my teeth—and those pulses are counting down minutes, not hours. Silra has ten seconds to find something—an air vent, a false wall, anything—or I'm pulling back and we make a run for it blind into whatever's waiting in that dark corridor.
The building creaks ominously around us, the floorboards groaning underfoot like the very foundations are about to crumble. I grip the heavy mirror tighter, bracing myself against the door as Jeane's voice rings out with desperate urgency. "Halie, put the barrier back fully! Brace that door with everything you have! Silra, find us an escape route now or we all die here!"
My heart pounds in my chest as I watch Halie struggle to comply, her hands still raw and blistered from her earlier contact with the wardstone energy. The air is thick with tension and the acrid scent of smoke, making it hard to breathe. I know we can't stay here much longer. The pulses emanating from the dark corridor are growing stronger, the wardstone's hunger for souls palpable. And yet, some twisted part of me yearns to push through that barrier, to surrender to the darkness and end this nightmare once and for all. But I can't let that happen. Not with my friends here, depending on me. I take a deep breath, steeling myself against the fear and uncertainty that threaten to overwhelm me. "Jeane, what do we do?" I ask, hating the tremor in my voice but unable to hide it entirely. "We can't stay like this forever."
The sorcerer's eyes are wild with exhaustion and desperation as she meets my gaze. "I don't know," she admits, her words barely a whisper. "But we have to try something. Anything."
I nod, swallowing hard against the lump in my throat. Halie is still struggling with the door, her face set in a grimace of pain and determination. Silra has vanished into the shadows, presumably searching for some way out. And me? I stand here, a civilian caught up in a world of magic and danger beyond my comprehension, armed only with a mirror and a desperate need to survive. But if there's one thing I've learned from this nightmare, it's that I'm stronger than I ever thought possible. And I'll be damned if I let some twisted wardstone take me down without a fight. "Okay," I say, my voice steadier now as I meet Jeane's gaze. "Tell us what to do. We'll follow your lead."
The sorcerer nods, a spark of determination igniting in her eyes as she turns back to the door, her hands glowing with arcane power. "Halie, brace that barrier. Silra, find us an exit or die trying. And Hera..."
She looks at me, her expression softening for just a moment. "Stay alert. We may need your strength before this is over."
I nod, a fierce surge of resolve rising within me. Whatever comes next, I'll be ready. The building creaks around us, the wardstone's pulses growing ever stronger as the darkness presses in from all sides. But for now, we stand united against the encroaching shadow, our fates intertwined in this moment of desperate survival. And as long as there is breath in my lungs and strength in my limbs, I will fight to the bitter end. For myself, for my friends, and for the chance at a future beyond the confines of this nightmare. This is it. This is all we have left. And by the gods, I will not let it be for nothing.
