At dark corridor in New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Hera

Hera · Civilian

I grip the mirror tightly, my knuckles white, as I try to brace myself against the door. The building creaks and groans ominously around us, each sound sending a fresh jolt of terror through my body. "We can't stay here," I insist, my voice cracking with desperation. "That thing... it's getting stronger."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane Cromwell grips her staff harder, knuckles whitening as the wardstone's pulse ripples through stone underfoot like an eager beast sensing prey. Enough. Her voice cuts through Hera's rising panic and Silra's focused searching. None of us goes into that dark corridor—not now, not ever. The wardstone answers presence with hunger. Halie shifts at the doorframe, her hands still burning where she touched it earlier—I see that in the set of her shoulders, the way she grips the mirror like a shield. Hera, Jeane addresses the civilian directly, you stay right there. Halie, put the barrier back fully—brace that door with everything you have. We hold this line. She turns to Silra, voice sharp enough to cut through the building's groans. You find us an escape route now or we all die here. The ceiling is giving way—I can feel it in my teeth—and those pulses are counting down minutes, not hours. Her demonic nature strains beneath human skin, wanting to simply obliterate the wardstone problem but knowing that would reveal everything.

To Hera, softening her tone just enough: We're safer here than anywhere else right now. The wardstone's power is concentrated in that corridor—whatever's down there, we don't want it. She doesn't mention what she felt when her barrier touched the darkness beyond: cold intelligence, ancient and patient. Trust me on this. Jeane focuses every ounce of will into maintaining the barrier spell against the wardstone energy bleeding through. Her arms feel like lead, exhaustion making each breath a conscious effort. Silra has ten seconds to find something—an air vent, a false wall, anything—or I'm pulling back and we make a run for it blind. She doesn't say what that means: running into whatever's causing these tremors or staying here to die slowly of exposure to the wardstone.

The building groans again, louder this time—a sound like old wood giving up its secrets. Time's up.
