Round 136

Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

The corridor darkens further as the wardstone pulses, each wave making the very air tremble with wrongness. Halie braces herself against the doorframe, hands already burning from residual corruption—she'd tried to insulate with lubricant from the scattered sex toys but it only made her grip treacherous on the smooth wood. Behind her, Hera presses close, her breathing ragged with fear that mirrors Halie's own rising panic.
Jeane grits her teeth, wings half-spread as she funnels every ounce of power into maintaining the barrier spell. The magic flickers, unstable and hungry, threatening to collapse with each pulse from the wardstone. She can feel the energy seeping through cracks in her concentration—dark tendrils that make her demonic nature writhe in protest even as she fights to contain them.
"Hera," Jeane snarls over her shoulder, voice tight with effort and barely controlled fear, "stay behind Halie. I won't let anything happen to you." The words come out more like a threat than a promise, but it's the best she can manage while holding back the tide of corruption with sheer magical will.
The water from the broken shower stall laps higher now, mixing with spilled lubricant to create an absurdly inappropriate hazard. The floor beneath them creaks ominously—structural stress compounding every other problem. Halie shifts her grip again, palms slipping on the smooth wood coated in silicone. She can feel Hera's warmth against her back, the civilian woman's fear a palpable thing.
"This isn't working," Halie mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "We need a real solution, not just... holding the door shut." Her eyes flick to the wardstone visible through the barrier spell—each pulse seems stronger than the last, each vibration making the very air taste of sex and decay.
Jeane's wings shudder with exertion as she fights to contain another pulse. The spell wavers dangerously before she snaps more arcane syllables, forcing it back into shape. "Unless someone has a better idea," she gasps between clenched teeth, "shut up and let me concentrate." But even as she says it, she knows the truth: maintaining this barrier is a losing battle against time and sheer magical output.
The corridor groans around them, plaster cracking somewhere overhead. The wardstone pulses again, and for a horrifying moment it seems like Jeane's spell might actually fail—energy bleeding through in visible waves of sickly green light. Halie presses back harder against Hera, one hand leaving the doorframe to steady herself as the floor beneath them shifts slightly.
"Hera," she says quickly, voice barely audible over the creaking wood and groaning structure, "if the barrier fails, I want you to grab that mirror and get behind me. Don't hesitate—just do it." She doesn't wait for an answer, both hands back on the frame as another pulse hits.
Jeane's vision blurs at the edges as she pours more power into the spell, wings spreading wider despite the cramped space. The wardstone is feeding on something—on their fear, their desperation, the very atmosphere of the penthouse—and growing stronger with each passing second. She can feel her control slipping, demonic nature straining against the human facade as she fights to maintain shape.
"This isn't sustainable," Jeane growls, more to herself than anyone else. "We need to end this thing, not just... contain it." But ending a wardstone tied to sexual energy requires exactly what they can least afford—more sex magic, more corruption, more risk.
The water laps higher still, now mid-calf deep and spreading. Hera shifts her grip on the heavy mirror, muscles tensing as she prepares to follow Halie's instructions. The civilian woman's eyes are wide with terror, but there's a core of determination visible beneath the fear—she won't go down without a fight.
"Hey," Hera says suddenly, voice cutting through the tension, "what if we... what if we use the wardstone's own energy against it? Like, redirect it somehow?" It's a desperate idea, born of panic and desperation, but Jeane finds herself considering it anyway—anything to get them out of this situation.
Jeane's head snaps around at Hera's suggestion, eyes blazing crimson with barely contained power. "Redirect it? You want me to channel more energy into that thing? Are you insane?" But even as she says it, her mind races through possibilities—rituals for energy transference, spells for magical redirection...
The corridor groans again, louder this time, and a shower of dust falls from the ceiling. Halie's grip slips on the lubricant-slicked wood for a second before she readjusts, muscles burning with exertion. "Jeane," she pants, "if you think it might work..."
It's madness to consider—channeling more power into something already trying to kill them—but Jeane finds herself calculating the spellwork anyway. The risk is astronomical, but so is the alternative of waiting here until the building collapses or the wardstone breaks through completely.
"Fine," Jeane hisses finally, "but if this kills us all, I'm holding you personally responsible, Hera." She doesn't wait for a response before diving into the complex incantation, wings beating with the effort as she begins to reshape the barrier spell into something... more dangerous.
The air crackles with ozone and wrongness as Jeane's new spell takes shape. The wardstone pulses again, but this time there's a subtle shift—energy bleeding off the edges instead of building up behind the barrier. Halie watches in awe mixed with terror as the magic twists and turns according to Jeane's commands.
"Everyone brace yourselves!" Jeane shouts over her shoulder, voice strained with concentration. "This is going to feel... weird."
The spell locks into place with a sound like tearing silk, and suddenly the entire corridor vibrates with redirected energy. The wardstone pulses again, but instead of hitting them directly, the wave seems to... pass through? Around? Halie can't quite tell as she clings to the doorframe, feeling the structure groan ominously beneath her feet.
"Is it working?" Hera asks nervously from behind her, and Halie realizes she's been holding her breath for seconds that felt like minutes.
"I think so," Jeane gasps, sweat beading on her forehead as she maintains the complex spellwork. "But I can't hold this forever—we need to move, now."
The water around their ankles swirls with redirected energy, tiny currents forming patterns that would be hypnotic if they weren't so terrifying. The wardstone pulses again, weaker this time, and Halie feels a surge of desperate hope.
"Hera," she says quickly, "grab the mirror and get ready to move. Jeane, tell us when you can drop the barrier—we need to get out before the whole building comes down."
Jeane nods grimly, wings beating slowly as she maintains the spell with every ounce of her power. The wardstone pulses once more, energy bleeding off harmlessly around them now instead of building up behind the door. She begins the incantation to drop the barrier...
"NOW!" Jeane screams, and the spell collapses in on itself with a sound like shattering glass.
The moment the barrier drops, Halie yanks Hera backward by her shirt collar—no time for gentleness now—and they both stumble through the doorway just as the wardstone pulses one final, devastating time. The dark corridor explodes outward in a wave of sexual energy and structural failure, wood and plaster and god-knows-what else spraying everywhere.
Jeane throws herself forward in the same instant, wings spreading wide to catch the brunt of the explosion. She hits the far wall hard enough to crack it, but the spellwork holds—most of the energy bleeds off around them instead of directly into their bodies. Dust and debris rain down as the penthouse suite groans ominously, entire sections of floor giving way with wet, tearing sounds.
For a moment, no one moves. Then Hera coughs, spitting out dust and what might be... lubricant? Halie helps her sit up, both women covered in plaster and God knows what else from the explosion. Jeane slides down the wall opposite them, wings slowly folding as she pants for breath.
"That," Jeane gasps between heaving breaths, "was a terrible plan."
Halie lets out a shaky laugh despite herself, adrenaline still singing through her veins. "But it worked?"
Jeane nods wearily, pushing herself to her feet with visible effort. "For now. But we need to get out of this building before the next wardstone decides to wake up or the entire structure collapses completely."
Hera scrambles upright, mirror still clutched in her hands like a weapon. "Agreed. And maybe find some clothes that aren't covered in... whatever that was." She gestures vaguely at the mixture of water, lubricant, and plaster coating all three of them.
Jeane offers Halie a hand up, pulling her to her feet with surprising strength for someone so exhausted. The sorceress's wings twitch as she surveys the damage—dark corridor now exposed to view, wardstone shattered into pieces that still pulse faintly with residual energy, entire suite half-collapsed and groaning ominously.
"Ladies," Jeane says with a grim smile, "I think our work here is done. Let's find an exit before this place decides to finish collapsing around us."
And with that, the three women pick their way carefully through the wreckage, leaving behind the scene of their latest near-death experience in what has become a very strange and dangerous New York high rise.
