At dark corridor in New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The wardstone pulsed again—harder this time—and something slithered across the stone doorframe through my hands. I snarled at the others to move back, pushing harder against the energy that crawled like living things against my spellwork. The floor beneath me shifted as another structural groan echoed through the suite; we had minutes maybe, and that thing downstairs was answering our presence with intent. "Hera!" My voice cracked sharper than intended. "Back away from there—its energy is feeding on fear." I couldn't risk her panicking, couldn't let her terror destabilize my control over the barrier spell or worse, draw whatever that wardstone held straight up through the doorframe and into this corridor. The pressure built in my skull with every pulse, something ancient and hungry responding to the desperation of five people trapped between death by collapse and death by whatever waited below. Silra was already moving toward the shaft opening—good—but I needed everyone clear of direct contact before that next pulse knocked us all down. "Everyone except Silra, back against the far wall now! The wardstone's not just reacting anymore; it's hunting."

Silra

Silra · Rogue

The wardstone pulsed again, harder this time, shaking dust from the ceiling. I grabbed the doorframe—the same stone Hera was pressing against—and felt it vibrate like a plucked wire. Something slithered across on the other side. Jeane snarled behind me, "Everyone except Silra, back against the far wall now!" I glanced over my shoulder—she looked feverish, eyes too bright, hands crackling with magic that was bleeding into something else entirely. I said, "If you keep answering its calls like a bitch in heat, it'll pull us through. We need distance." I moved away from the door toward the shaft opening, leaving her to hold the line alone because two of us touching the wardstone would just give it twice the leverage. The floor tilted under me—I wasn't running, just relocating the weak point.

Hera

Hera · Civilian

Hera's hands tremble as she grips the mirror tighter. The weight of it digs into her palms, but she barely notices. Her eyes are fixed on the door, on the wardstone at its center. "Jeane," Hera calls out, her voice strained. "What do we do? How do we stop this thing?"

The sorcerer doesn't respond immediately. Her brow is furrowed in concentration, her hands moving in intricate patterns as she works whatever magic she's trying to muster against the wardstone. Halie shifts beside Hera, her face pale but determined. "We keep the door closed," she says firmly. "If that thing gets through..."

She doesn't need to finish the sentence. The implications hang heavy in the air. Silra's movements towards the shaft opening are slow and deliberate, each step careful on the slick floor. She glances back at them, her expression unreadable. Hera swallows hard, trying to ignore the pulsing heat of the wardstone. It feels like it's pressing against her skin, a tangible force pushing against the barrier she and the others have created. "What about that spell you mentioned earlier?" she asks Jeane. "The one you said could contain it?"

Jeane shakes her head, not taking her eyes off the door. "It won't be enough," she mutters. "Not by itself."

Hera's heart sinks. She looks around at their makeshift barricade - the mirror, the bottles of lube, the tangle of bedsheets and towels. It seems so flimsy now, so inadequate against whatever is on the other side. "We need to find another way," Hera says, her voice tight with desperation. "There has to be something else we can do."
