At dark corridor in New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Hera

Hera · Civilian

The corridor trembles around us, the wardstone's energy pulsing through the very walls. Panic rises in my throat as I watch Silra crawl through the shaft, our only hope for escape. Jeane and Halie struggle to hold the barricade together, their faces set with grim determination. I know I should be doing something to help, but fear has rooted me in place. The wardstone's presence is a tangible thing, pressing against my skin like a malevolent force. I can almost feel it reaching out for me, hungry for the power that flows through Jeane's magic. "Hera!" Halie's voice snaps me out of my trance. "We need your help! The door is about to give way!"

I nod, my mouth dry with fear. I move to join them at the barricade, bracing myself against the heavy object that is barely keeping the door closed. The wood groans as if in agony, and I can feel the heat of the wardstone seeping through. "We have to hold it," Jeane grunts, her eyes closed in concentration. "Silra needs more time."

I nod again, my hands aching from the strain. But I don't let go. I can't let go. Not with the lives of my friends on the line. The wardstone pulses again, stronger this time, and I feel a wave of nausea wash over me. Whatever is down there is getting stronger, fed by our desperation and Jeane's magic. And I know that if we don't find a way to stop it, we're all going to be lost.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I can feel it—whatever's down there is answering my magic now, pulsing back energy like... like it recognizes me specifically. This isn't just stone anymore. It's aware. Jeane shifts her weight, boots slick on the floor from where Halie's brilliant idea dumped lubricant everywhere. The wardstone pulses again, harder this time, and she grits her teeth against the sensation of something alive crawling across her skin through the doorframe. "It knows we're here," she snarls, pushing back with a spell that tastes like burnt herbs and desperation. "Move! All of you!"

Silra

Silra · Rogue

The wardstone answers us like a predator waking from long sleep. The floor buckles under my boot—another joist giving way somewhere in the building's guts. Jeane's fighting it, snarling at the thing on the other side of that door while her hands glow too bright for comfort. I'm already moving toward the shaft opening because staying still means dying slow. The water from the broken shower is up to my ankles now, mixing with whatever lube got spilled in the chaos. Slippery floor and structural collapse make for a delightful combination.
