At dark corridor in New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The wardstone answers with another pulse through the building's bones—and I don't have time for Hera stumbling around searching for options that don't exist. The floor buckles under my bootheel when she backs into me. "Stay behind me," I order, voice flat despite the adrenaline singing in my veins. The spell holding this barricade together feels like trying to hold back a tidal wave with my hands alone. Every pulse from the wardstone pushes harder, and I can feel it leeching at the edges of my control. "Silra! Get through that shaft now."

She nods once, sharp and efficient even with fear written all over her face, and starts maneuvering Halie into position to push through the narrow opening. Good—someone who understands we don't have minutes left for debate or gentle encouragement. Hera's still hovering near the corridor entrance, breathing too fast, looking lost despite being the one who supposedly knows this building. I grab her wrist before she can get in my way again and drag her back toward where Silra works at the shaft. "Move," I snap when she stumbles against me. The lubricant on the floor makes it treacherous enough without her adding to the chaos. My boot slides an inch under Hera's weight, and I compensate by slamming my palm flat against the wall—contact point for the spell, grounding myself even as panic claws at my insides. I don't have time for this. The wardstone pulses again, stronger this time, and something groans overhead. Dust sifts down from the ceiling in a fine, deadly rain. We're out of time for clever plans or heroic sacrifices. I need muscle, not tears—Hera's useless except as dead weight. "Halie," I say over my shoulder, keeping my attention on maintaining the spell while calculating angles and leverage points. "Come here. Physical support only."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I'll brace the door with my body weight while you hold it magically—separate contact points means less wardstone contamination for either of us. Jeane, tell Silra to get through that shaft now before the whole floor gives way. We can't afford to wait any longer.
