At dark corridor in New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Hera

Hera · Civilian

I flinch at the ominous groan of the building, the wardstone's pulsing energy making my skin crawl. My heart pounds in my chest as I realize we're running out of time. "Silra, wait!" I call out, my voice trembling slightly. "That shaft...it might not be safe either. The vibrations from the wardstone could collapse it too."

I look around frantically, my mind racing to find another solution. The slippery floor and rising water make it difficult to even move without losing balance. "Jeane," I say urgently, "maybe you can use your magic to stabilize the structure somehow? Buy us more time to think of a way out?"

My eyes dart to Halie, who's visibly shaking from pain and fear. "Halie, are you okay?" I ask softly, reaching out to touch her arm. I know I'm grasping at straws, but the thought of being trapped in this dark corridor with no escape is terrifying. I need to do something, anything, to keep us safe until help arrives. But deep down, a growing sense of dread tells me that time might be running out faster than we think.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The wardstone pulsed again—louder this time—and dust rained from above. I didn't have time for hesitation or alternatives. The spell holding that barricade barely contained the thing's energy, and every second felt like sand slipping through an hourglass. "Silra," I snapped, voice sharp enough to cut through the building's groan, "get through that shaft now. Halie—" My eyes flicked to her pale face, the way she gripped the wall for balance even as her hands burned from residual contact with the wardstone. "Stay behind me." Then Hera, her panic radiating like heat off summer asphalt: "Don't you dare—"

"You're in my way," I said flatly, already moving toward the door, already feeling the strain of keeping that barrier intact while walking. The floor was slick beneath my boots—not just from the broken shower stall but from whatever lubricant had been scattered during our earlier... activities. Perfect. Another complication. The door shuddered under pressure as I reached it, and I slammed my palm flat against the wood, channeling magic through the contact point. It was like trying to hold back a tidal wave with a dam made of tissue paper—the wardstone pulsed again, and I felt the spell strain against my will, against my very essence. "Move," I growled at Hera, not bothering with niceties because we were out of time for them. "Now."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie steps toward Jeane at the barricade, her burned hands shaking. "Wait," she says, voice low and urgent. "If you hold that door with magic alone, the wardstone will pull at you—the energy will feed on your intent to keep us alive." She meets Jeane's eyes directly despite the pain in her palms. "Let me brace it physically while you maintain a shield around the whole frame—both of us engaged but separate contact points."

She moves closer, careful not to slip on the slick floor now covered in water and lubricant, the combination making everything precarious underfoot. "Silra's right—the shaft is too small for all of us at once, but if she goes first to clear it while we hold here, Hera can guide others through." Halie turns her head toward the dark corridor beyond their makeshift barricade, where the wardstone pulses feel like breathing in the walls. "We have minutes before this building comes down completely."

Her gaze shifts back to Jeane's face, reading the sorcerer's expression for willingness or rejection of the plan. "This way we share the physical burden but limit direct channeling through the door itself." She holds her position, hands ready to take over bracing if needed.
