Round 108

Phase: converging

The building screamed overhead, a sound of wood and steel giving up their fight against gravity and time. The wardstone answered with its own pulse, faster now, stronger, each beat shaking the floor beneath their feet like a drum announcing doom. Water leaked from the broken shower stall in one corner, mixing with spilled lubricant to create a treacherous surface that threatened to send them sliding into the very danger they tried to contain.
Jeane's hands were pressed against the bathroom door, fingers white-knuckled around the handle, blood already beading and running down her wrists from where she gripped too hard. The wood of the frame groaned with each pulse from the wardstone beyond—living timber responding to magic older than the city itself. Her wings were half-spread behind her, leathery and protective, crimson eyes fixed on the barrier between them and whatever waited in the darkness of the hallway.
Silra moved across the room with predatory grace despite the slippery floor, her technomancer's instincts screaming at her to find an exit, any exit, before the building decided for them. "Mirror as barricade? That won't hold shit against a determined charge or structural failure," she said, already calculating angles and leverage points. "We need something heavier, something that won't slide when the floor moves."
Halie stood at the door opposite Jeane, hands pressed flat against the wood on her side of the barrier, feeling each pulse from the wardstone vibrate through her palms like a heartbeat counting down seconds. She could see Hera in the corner—her skin still gleaming with that strange corruption, eyes wide and terrified—and knew they couldn't hold this position much longer. The ward's energy was seeping through the cracks now, visible as faint blue mist that curled around the frame.
"Listen to me," Halie said, voice strained but steady. "We can't stay here—structural collapse is minutes away at best, and the wardstone energy is already breaching containment. We need a new plan, something that gets us out of this room before the whole floor gives way." Her eyes flicked to Jeane's bleeding hands, then back to Silra. "Unless either of you geniuses has a spell or gadget that can teleport us through solid concrete and three stories of collapsing building?"
The wardstone pulsed again—faster—and dust fell from the ceiling in a fine rain that mixed with water and lube on the floor. Time was running out faster than their options, and the air in the small room grew heavy with the weight of impending choices and the certainty that whatever happened next would change them irrevocably.
