At bathroom in a New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I can hear the building groaning overhead like a wounded beast. The wardstone pulses faster now, answering Silra's approach with thick wrong energy that crawls across my skin like oil. We don't touch it. I pull Hera back from the door, grip her shoulders—her hands are cold—and tell her to secure this door with me. My fingers find the door frame, press wood against stone wall, and feel the tremors coming through both. Abby's voice cuts in: I can't reach the window latch! The water from that broken shower is ankle-deep now, sloshing with every shudder of the building. I glance at Jeane—her futanari nature exposed earlier means she's vulnerable too—and then to Silra crouched by the lube barricade trying to make it taller. We're trapped in here together. I say what needs saying: If that wardstone activates fully, this bathroom becomes our tomb. My voice barely trembles despite my heart hammering against ribs. I'm a cleric, not a fighter, but right now I need to be both—protect the civilians and keep this sorceress with complicated anatomy from harm. The building groans again, louder this time, and dust sprinkles down from the ceiling like winter ash. We have minutes at best before structural failure turns this room into a coffin. I'm not ready for that—not when there's still work to do in this world. I make my decision out loud: We're going to brace this door with everything we can find—bodies included—and pray the wardstone stays dormant long enough for us to get out alive. My hands are already moving, feeling along the walls for something stable to push against.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I grip Hera's wrist hard enough to hurt, yank her away from the door frame. "Stop pushing against it—you're letting its energy in!" The wardstone pulses again, thick and wrong like honey being poured backwards through reality, and I have to resist the urge to vomit. "Silra! How tall is that barricade?"

"Three bottles high now," she calls back, voice tense but controlled as she stacks another slippery bottle on top of the others. "Another foot maybe." Good—at least one person here with sense enough not to invite disaster directly. I shove Hera toward the far wall, away from both door and wardstone. "Stay there and don't move." Her eyes are wide and glassy with fear, breath coming too fast, and I recognize that look—I've seen it before when prey realizes the predator has them cornered. Useful for keeping servants in line but annoying as hell right now because panicked people make stupid decisions. The building groans overhead like something huge and dying, and through the floor I can feel the structure shifting underneath us. We have minutes at best before whatever's holding this place up gives way completely. The water from the broken shower is ankle-deep already, mixing with spilled lube to make the tile floor slick as ice. I check my inventory again mentally—assorted toys, lubricant bottles, bondage gear, Sybian, batteries—and curse under my breath. Not exactly a demolition expert's toolkit. But then my eyes land on the heavy steel frame of the shower stall and an idea forms, ugly but necessary. "Silra," I call out, keeping my voice level despite the pressure building in my chest, "I need you to help me with something. Hera stays where she is."

Silra

Silra · Rogue

The wardstone pulses like a diseased heart. I don't have time for moral arguments—I grab more lube bottles and toss them at Jeane's barricade with precise spins so they stack instead of topple. "Barricade height needs another foot," I call out, already calculating angles and mass distribution. "Unless you're planning to brute-force the door down yourself?"

The building groans overhead like a beast in pain. The shower water is now ankle-deep, which means the plumbing's compromised—either from the initial blast or from structural stress. Either way, we're sitting in rising floodwater while a magical landmine pulses beneath us. I don't say: 'Jeane, I know you want to be a hero and save everyone, but this isn't that kind of story.'

I don't say: 'Hera, I'm sorry your vacation turned into a horror show, but try not to die in the next five minutes.'

What I do say is: "Anyone with better stacking skills than me, get over here. We need this wall solid before the building decides to perform an impromptu implosion."
