Jeane slammed the bathroom door shut behind them, muffling but not eliminating the ominous groans from outside. Hera pressed her back against the cool tile wall, trying to still her racing heart. Abby was huddled in the corner opposite her, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. "Hera," Jeane's voice cut through the tense silence. "We need to get you and Abby out of here. Now."
The building shuddered again, harder this time, and Hera felt a fresh wave of terror wash over her. She gripped the edge of the bathtub with shaking hands, her eyes darting around the small room as if searching for an escape route that wasn't there. The water from the broken shower stall was already ankle-deep on the floor, sloshing with every movement.
Jeane's crimson eyes were blazing with urgency as she turned back to face them. "Listen to me," she said, her voice low and commanding. "I need you both to stay calm and do exactly as I say. Halie and I are going to handle the wardstone, but we can't do that if we're worrying about keeping you safe too." She moved closer to Hera, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You're tougher than you think," she said softly. "I need you to be strong for Abby right now."
Hera nodded, swallowing hard as she tried to control her breathing. She could feel the wardstone's energy pulsing through the walls, each beat sending a fresh jolt of panic through her body. But Jeane was right—she had to stay calm for Abby's sake.
Jeane turned her attention back to the door, her hand already moving to the hilt of one of her daggers. "Stay here," she ordered before slipping out into the hallway, leaving Hera alone with Abby and the ominous groans of the collapsing building.
In the master bedroom, Halie's face was pale with fear as she watched Jeane and Hera disappear into the bathroom. The wardstone on the nightstand pulsed again, sending a fresh wave of divine energy coursing through her body. She could feel it feeding off her arousal, growing stronger with each passing moment.
This is madness, she thought to herself, fighting against the urge to touch herself. We can't keep doing this—every time we interact with that thing, it gets more powerful. But what choice do we have? If we don't find a way to control it, this entire building is going to come crashing down around us.
She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what needed to be done. "Silra," she called out, her voice barely audible over the creaking of the floorboards. "I need your help with something." The elf woman turned from where she was examining the wardstone, her eyes wide with both fear and curiosity.
"What is it?" Silra asked, moving closer to Halie.
"We need to find a way to contain this thing," Halie said, gesturing toward the pulsating stone. "But first, we have to make sure no one else touches it." She glanced around the room, her eyes landing on a large mirror hanging on the wall opposite the bed. An idea began to form in her mind—a dangerous plan, but one that might just work.
Back in the bathroom, Hera could hear muffled voices and the sound of movement outside. She exchanged a worried glance with Abby before speaking in a low voice. "Do you think they'll be okay?" she asked, referring to Jeane and Halie.
Abby shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. "I don't know," she whispered back. "This whole situation is insane. Why did we ever come here?"
Hera didn't have an answer for that—she'd been asking herself the same question since they arrived at this cursed penthouse suite. But dwelling on it wouldn't help them now. She needed to focus on surviving the next few minutes, and that meant following Jeane's orders.
Another powerful shudder ran through the building, accompanied by a loud cracking sound from somewhere above them. Hera's heart leapt into her throat as she imagined the ceiling collapsing down onto them. She looked at Abby, seeing her own terror reflected in the other woman's eyes.
"We're going to be okay," Hera said, more for her own benefit than Abby's. "Jeane and Halie won't let anything happen to us."
But even as she spoke the words, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were all trapped in a nightmare from which there was no escape—at least not one that didn't involve sacrificing themselves to this insatiable wardstone and its twisted demands.
