At Penthouse suite in a New York high rise, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural instability from wardstone interaction. Someone has to answer that change now.

Abby

Abby · Civilian

I stand frozen in place, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. The groaning of the building is a physical thing now, vibrating through the floorboards and up my legs until I feel it in my bones.
My eyes dart from Jeane to Hera, then to Silra who is bent over the wardstone, her expression one of intense concentration. Around us, the air crackles with an energy that feels both ancient and utterly alien.
Jeane's words echo in my mind - 'chaos' - but they sound like a death sentence when spoken here, among these trembling walls. The idea of creating more disorder feels like inviting the very thing we're trying to avoid.
"I... I don't know if that's wise," I say, my voice so faint it is almost lost in the creaking of the floor. It comes out as a strained whisper, barely audible even to myself. The thought of being crushed beneath falling stone makes my stomach lurch.
My gaze falls on Hera, who looks just as terrified as I feel. For a moment, our shared fear creates a fragile bond between us. She gives me a small, desperate nod, confirming my own terror. We are all at the mercy of this thing, this wardstone that demands tribute or destruction.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's voice cuts through the building's groans like a razor. "Enough of this pathetic hesitation! The wardstone wants spectacle—then give it a goddamn show." She yanks Hera towards her, ignoring the human's startled resistance. "You don't have to enjoy it, just make it convincing enough that thing stops trying to collapse us all."

She glares at Silra. "And you—I didn't hire your rogue ass for decoration. If you can really overload its sensors with chaos, then do it before I decide this whole penthouse needs redecorating." Her wings flutter in barely controlled rage and arousal, a storm of dark feathers against the room's flickering light. "I'm not asking here," she snaps at anyone who doubts her intent. "This is happening whether you like it or not."

Hera

Hera · Civilian

Hera's heart races, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps as Jeane yanks her closer. The air crackles with an ancient, alien energy, and the building groans ominously around them. "Please," Hera whispers, her voice trembling. "There has to be another way."

Jeane's grip on Hera's arm tightens painfully, her eyes wild with desperation and barely contained fury. "There is no other way," she hisses. "The wardstone demands tribute, and if we don't give it what it wants, this whole fucking building will come crashing down around our ears."

Hera swallows hard, her throat dry with fear. She knows Jeane is right, but the thought of putting on a spectacle, of becoming nothing more than a plaything for the wardstone's twisted desires, makes her skin crawl. She looks to Halie and Silra, silently begging for help, for another solution. But they both look equally frightened, their faces pale and drawn in the pulsing light of the wardstone. Hera takes a deep, shuddering breath, trying to calm the frantic beating of her heart. She knows she has no choice. She has to do this, has to become Jeane's willing partner in appeasing the wardstone, or else they'll all be crushed beneath the collapsing ruins of the penthouse. But even as she nods, even as she allows Jeane to pull her closer, Hera feels a sense of deep unease settle over her. She doesn't know what the future holds, but she has a feeling that whatever happens next, nothing will ever be the same again.
