Round 342 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The air is thick with tension as we stand before the pedestal, the Starheart artifact pulsing with an intense, golden light. The creature's eyes burn with urgency, its gaze locked onto the crystal orb. "Seal it now," it urges, its voice low and commanding. I hesitate, my hand trembling as I grasp the orb, now radiating a warm, golden energy. Suddenly, the ground shudders violently, and a section of the wall behind us slides open, revealing a dark, narrow passageway. The creature's voice cuts through the din, "We must move, Abby! The corruption is closing in!" A low, pulsing hum fills the air, and I feel the walls' energy surging towards us, as if trying to tear us apart. The creature's hand tightens around mine, its grip like a vice. "We can't seal it here," it growls, its eyes blazing with determination. "We must move, now."
I feel a jolt of panic shoot through me as the creature's grip on my hand tightens, its voice a low growl of urgency cutting through the oppressive hum filling the chamber. The Starheart artifact pulses in my grasp, its golden light seeming to flicker and dim as if responding to the rising threat around us. I look up at the creature, seeing the fierce determination burning in its eyes, and a shiver of cold fear runs down my spine.
"I... I understand," I manage to stammer out, my voice so quiet it's almost lost in the growing noise. The thought of being trapped in this underground lair with an awakening corruption fills me with dread, but the creature’s unwavering resolve is a beacon in the chaos.
I take a deep breath, trying to center myself as I clutch the Starheart orb tighter. The air thickens around us, heavy with an otherworldly energy that makes my skin prickle. Every sound - the shifting of stone, the distant groans of the structure - feels like an ominous warning of what’s to come. The narrow passageway seems to beckon, a dark promise of escape.
My gaze darts around the chamber, taking in the glowing mushrooms and the pulsing walls. It's a strange, alien world, and every part of it seems to hum with a malevolent intent. I know we have no choice but to follow the creature’s lead, to trust its instincts even when everything around us screams danger.
As I turn back towards the creature, I see its form shift slightly, becoming more solid, more human-like. Its eyes lock onto mine, and for a moment, I feel an intense connection, a shared understanding of the peril we face. It's as if our thoughts are intertwined, our fates inextricably linked by this mission and the artifact I now hold.
"Lead the way," I say, my voice gaining a fraction more confidence as I meet its gaze. The creature nods, a subtle gesture of acknowledgment that sends another shiver through me. It releases my hand, the sudden absence of its touch leaving me feeling strangely bereft, and turns towards the dark tunnel.
I follow close behind, my free arm brushing against its back as we press forward into the unknown. The darkness is almost complete now, the only light coming from the Starheart orb in my hands and the faint, pulsing radiance of the walls. The air grows cooler, damper, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else - a sharp, metallic tang that makes my nostrils flare.
Every step we take seems to echo impossibly loud in the confined space, but I trust the creature not to lead us astray. It moves with a purposeful grace, its form barely visible ahead of me, guiding us deeper into the heart of this ancient place. The walls seem to breathe around us, their pulsating energy a constant, unnerving presence.
As we round a sharp corner, the tunnel opens up into another chamber, smaller than the one we just left but no less unsettling. A massive, twisted tree dominates the space, its roots delving deep into the stone floor while its branches reach up towards an unseen ceiling. Bioluminescent fungi cling to every surface, casting an eerie green glow that flickers and dances like living flame.
The creature stops abruptly, raising a hand in warning. I nearly collide with its back before coming to a halt, my heart hammering against my ribs. It points silently towards the tree, and I see what has caught its attention - a series of small, glowing orbs nestled among the roots, each one pulsing in time with the walls' rhythm.
I feel a fresh wave of unease wash over me as I realize these must be some kind of corrupting source, nodes in this labyrinthine structure. The creature’s posture has shifted, becoming more alert, more predatory. Its head tilts slightly, as if listening to something only it can hear.
Suddenly, a low groaning sound fills the chamber, and the ground beneath our feet begins to tremble once more. A section of wall opposite the tree slides open with a grinding noise, revealing yet another dark passageway leading even deeper underground. The creature’s eyes narrow, its gaze fixed on the new opening.
"The corruption is spreading," it whispers, its voice a low rumble that seems to resonate in my bones. "We cannot let it gain a foothold here."
It turns back to face me, its expression deadly serious.*
"We must destroy those orbs before moving on. They are the keys to this chamber’s defense. Are you prepared to help?"
