Round 273

Phase: escalating

The walls' synchronized breathing stopped completely—everything except that low pulsing hum growing stronger like heartbeat counting down seconds until next adaptation phase.
Abby's eyes widened as she stared at the shifting stone before her. This is bad, she whispered, more to herself than anyone else. The air around her grew heavy, thick with an otherworldly energy that made her skin crawl. She could feel it pressing in on her from all sides, filling her lungs with each breath. We need to get out of here. Now.
She took a tentative step back, her gaze never leaving the writhing walls. The last thing she wanted was to be any closer to whatever was controlling this place. But as she moved, the ground beneath her gave a slight tremor, and the sound of distant stone grinding against stone echoed through the tunnel. Shit, she hissed, freezing in place.
Her heart raced as she watched the symbols on the wall seem to shift, their pulsing light intensifying. A faint, flickering glow began to emanate from the walls themselves, casting eerie shadows on the stone floor. Was it natural? Or was it part of the entity's influence? I don't think we should be here, she said, her voice trembling slightly. This feels wrong. Like really, really wrong.
She glanced back over her shoulder, half-expecting to see something reaching out for her. But the corridor behind her remained empty, save for more of the same shifting, breathing walls. We need to find another way back to the chamber, she continued, her mind racing. Maybe we can use the sybian to... I don't know, break through or something?
Her eyes darted around the narrow space, looking for any sign of a hidden passage or weakness in the stone. But all she could see was more of the same living, breathing architecture. Or maybe we should just run? The words were out before she could stop them, her fear getting the better of her.
She took another step back, her hand reaching out to steady herself against the wall. The moment her palm made contact with the cool stone, a jolt of energy shot through her, and she yanked it back with a startled gasp. Okay, not touching the walls, she muttered, rubbing her tingling palm against her thigh.
The pulsing hum continued to grow stronger, filling the air around them. Abby could feel it vibrating in her chest, making her heart beat faster. We need to do something, she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Before whatever this is decides we're not worth keeping around anymore.
She looked at Hera, pressed against the opposite wall, and felt a pang of guilt. She wanted to help, but every instinct screamed at her to run, to put as much distance between herself and this place as possible. I'm sorry, she said softly, knowing Hera couldn't hear her through the stone barrier. But I can't... I can't be here right now.
With that, Abby turned on her heel and fled back down the corridor, her footsteps echoing off the living walls as she ran. The last thing she saw was the pulsing blue-green light growing stronger behind her, the entity's power responding to her retreat.
