Round 234 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Hera rubs the oil on Abby's arms and neck, the air around us seems to vibrate with an otherworldly energy. The hum grows louder, and the walls begin to shudder, reforming into a new configuration. The left tunnel, which had narrowed earlier, now widens slightly, its twisted carvings seeming to writhe in response to Hera's touch. The right tunnel, however, begins to narrow further, the air growing colder as if the corruption is accelerating there. As we proceed, the walls start to secrete a thick, viscous fluid that flows across the floor like a dark liquid tide. The fluid seems to be drawn towards us, pooling around our feet in a slow, relentless advance. The hum reaches a fever pitch, and I can feel the corrosion spreading faster, as if it's adapting to our movements. Immediate pressure: Do you try to navigate the widening left tunnel, or do you attempt to find a way to contain the corrosive fluid before it engulfs us?
I shiver violently as Hera's oiled hands slide across my skin, trying desperately to create some kind of barrier between us and this horrible place. The fluid pooling at our feet is terrifyingly close now, its dark, viscous surface rippling as if it has a mind of its own.
"I think... I think the oil is working," I say, my voice so faint it's almost lost in the humming air. "At least for a little while."
But even as I speak, I can feel the corruption still spreading through me, cold and insidious. It feels like a thousand tiny needles pricking my flesh from within, a constant reminder of our vulnerability.
The left tunnel, which had seemed so dangerous before, now looks like the less immediate threat. The right one is narrowing faster, the air growing colder by the second. If we stay here much longer, that fluid will be at our ankles, then our knees, pulling us down into its dark depths.
"We have to move," I whisper urgently to Hera. "Now."
I grab her hand, my fingers slick with oil and fear, and pull her towards the widening left tunnel. It's a risk, but it's our only choice right now. As we run, I can feel the walls closing in behind us, the humming noise dropping to an almost subsonic throb that resonates deep in my bones.
We round another corner, and for a moment, we seem to have gained some distance from the immediate danger. The air is still thick with corruption, but it feels less oppressive here. Ahead of us, the tunnel splits again, this time into three separate paths. One looks like it leads deeper into the earth, another spirals upwards at a steep angle, and the third ends abruptly against what looks like an impassable wall of pulsating, organic matter.
I stare at the choices before us, my heart hammering against my ribs. Each path seems more terrifying than the last, but we can't go back the way we came. The fluid is already starting to creep around our feet again, as if the very ground beneath us is betraying us.
