The stone walls breathed in unison, a rhythmic pulse that seemed to count down the seconds until whatever intelligence controlled this place made its next move. Jeane hovered at maximum altitude above the pressure plates, flame resistance dropping below fifty percent and arcane strain approaching critical levels—she could feel the magic leaking out of her like blood from an open wound. The sweet-sickly aroma had intensified dramatically when Halie's body began merging with the floor, now tainted by the scent of corruption spreading through her flesh.

Halie stood there watching her own arm turn blue, fingers twitching uncontrollably as the cold sensation climbed up her shoulder toward her brain. She couldn't feel pain anymore—not in the way a living person could—but she could sense the wrongness spreading, consuming nerve endings and replacing them with something alien. Her vision had already begun fading to grey at the edges, the world losing color like an old photograph left too long in the sun.

"You're not going to die," Jeane said, voice tight with forced calm. "I won't let that happen." But her words rang hollow even to her own ears—what could she do? Maintain altitude and hope the strain didn't kill her before they found a solution? Document everything while her magic failed? There was no solution. No way to reverse this kind of corruption once it took hold.

The walls' synchronized breathing stopped completely then, everything going still except for that low pulsing hum growing stronger with each beat like a heart counting down seconds until whatever came next arrived. The living stone around Halie's body had absorbed her completely now, surface rippling slightly where she'd been consumed. And the entire passageway seemed to be... listening.

"Whatever happens," Halie said, voice barely above a whisper, "document everything. Every detail. This is important research—even if we don't survive it." Her fingers twitched again, grip strength already failing as the corruption climbed past her elbow. She couldn't touch anyone like this—not with that stuff spreading through her veins.

Jeane nodded, wings beating slowly to maintain altitude while she recorded every detail of Halie's transformation. The arcane strain was becoming unbearable now, vision blurring at the edges from magical exhaustion. But she had to keep going—had to document everything until the very end, no matter what happened next.

The pulsing hum grew louder still, filling the entire passageway with its rhythmic thrum. Something was coming. Something that had learned from their presence here, adapted its defenses, and was about to make its move.
